Junior Varsity

Red Oak JV also brought home a win, defeating Clarinda Cardinals 8-6. Kyndal Kells was 2-3 with a single and a triple with a run scored. Morgan Akers went 2-3 with two singles. Maddie Wendt and Trinity Peterson each scored twice.

Southwest Valley

Wednesday, June 8, the team went to Corning to challenge the Southwest Valley Timberwolves, losing 6-3.

The Tigers started sluggish, going three up and three down and giving up four runs on three doubles and a single from the Timberwolves.

Innings two and three remained scoreless for both teams, then the Tigers mounted a threat in the top of the fourth with a single, double and a sacrifice bunt. The Timberwolves added three errors in favor of the Tigers to bring the score within one.

Timberwolves’ Danica Sunderman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to secure the lead.

Kylie McBride, Payton Thomas and Kennedy Moore all rapped doubles for the Timberwolves.

Kiera Roberts took the win for the Timberwolves with two strike outs and only one earned run facing 33 sluggers.

Welter took the loss after six innings of pitching. She gave up nine hits and six runs and struck out five.

St. Alberts

The Tigers went 1-1 in the double header with St. Alberts on Thursday.

In game one, the Tigers battled nine innings before losing 4-3. Buntrock scored twice and Sarah Behrens brought in the other run. Syd Connell drove in two runs on a single.

In game two the Tigers took the field with a new determination, winning 16-6. All girls scored at least once and Streicher, Wendt and Hailey Fada scored three a piece. Buntrock led the team with three doubles.

“It was great to see the girls come back and win the second in pretty big fashion after losing a close one in game one,” Coach Johnson said. “Lots of teams quit after losing a heartbreak game and we didn’t. That says a lot.”

Tournament Action

The Tigers participated in the Creston Classic on Saturday, along with 13 other teams. Game one ended with the Tigers defeating Mount Ayr 6-4.  Buntrock hit a two run home run to left field in the third to be up by four. However, the Tigers didn’t score in the fourth or fifth and allowed Mount Ayr to bring the game to a tie. Kells had a pinch hit two run single in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.

The Tigers hit the field for defense in the seventh and took Mount Ayr down in three.

“It was great to see the last inning go the way it did,” Coach Johnson beamed.

Red Oak lost game two of the tournament to Murray 10-0 in five innings.

“We didn’t play too bad,” Johnson said. “We just were facing a really good hitting team.”

Johnson had two hits. Streicher, Behrens and Buntrock each got a hit in the game.

Buntrock and Welter were named players of the game.
