Tigers win 10, defeat Corning

RED OAK – In 2009, the Tigers’ softball team won a total of 11 games. This season, the Tigers have won 11 games at the halfway point.
Tuesday, the Tigers picked up their ninth win defeating Shenandoah 5-2, picking up 11 hits against Filly pitching.
Senior Jami Redel led the Tigers both at the plate and at the rubber, hitting two of four with two RBI, scoring two runs, and allowed only five hits while striking out six Shenandoah batters.
Cheyanne Nelson, Kristi Yardas, and Paige Isaacson each had two hits in the Tiger win. Isaacson also scored two runs.
The Tigers’ 10th win came the next evening as Red Oak traveled to Corning, winning 7-3.
Red Oak tore through the Red Raider pitching with 13 hits in the win. Nelson was three of three, scoring one run.
Redel, Yardas, Gabrielle French, and Lexie Holmgren each had two hits. Holmgren and Yardas also had two RBI each. Holmgren also picked up her first home run of the season.
Redel pitched a complete game, giving up one earned run on six hits, while striking out seven Red Raider batters.
In the first round of the Creston tournament, Friday, the Tigers lost a heartbreaker to Albia, 4-3.
The Tigers tied the score, 1-1, in the top of the sixth, as French scored on a pass ball after leading off with a triple. Holmgren scored the Tigers’ go-ahead run on a pass ball later in the inning.
Albia struck back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs, to lead 4-2 going into the final frame.
Isaacson scored the Tigers’ final run on a Redel single, but Red Oak fell short, leaving two runners on base to end the game.
Red Oak bounced back, winning 9-2 over Orient Macksburg led by Caitlin Smith and Redel, who each had two hits. French and Holmgren also had a two-hit game, each hitting a double, a single, and driving in two runs apiece.
Redel and Homgren combined at the rubber, giving up one earned run and a total of six hits.
Red Oak finished their week and the Creston Tournament with a loss to Mount Ayr, 9-5. Elain Walker and Paige Stoaks both went three of four with the bat in the losing effort.
Redel and French we awarded Player of the Game tournament medals.
The Tigers finished the week with an overall record of 11-5.
