Tigers lose overtime heartbreaker in Clarinda; beat Shenandoah
CLARINDA—The Red Oak Tigers boys’ basketball team lost in overtime to Clarinda Friday night, 58-52, after getting an opportunity to win the game in regulation.
With the game tied 46-46, Gustavo Rodgrigues missed a mid-range jumper with less than five seconds in the game, but Dakota White rebounded the ball and had a put-back opportunity that came up short.
“We just have to lock down on the defensive end,” Tigers Head Coach Brad Schlieman said. “We gave up a pretty clean look to tie it.”
The game stayed close in overtime, but Red Oak had to foul during the final minute.
White finished the night with 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Tanner Johnson finished the game with a double-double, scoring 12 points with 10 rebounds.
“We really got beat on the offensive glass. Clarinda grabbed a lot of offensive rebounds,” Schlieman said. “Instead of having a two-point lead down the stretch, maybe you have a six or eight-point lead down the stretch.”
Tuesday night, the Tigers lost to the Atlantic Trojans, 76-45 in Atlantic. Red Oak took a 13-11 lead by the end of the first quarter.
However, the Trojans exploded for 28 points in the second quarter and led at halftime, 39-22.
Atlantic came out in the third quarter and put 26 points up against the Tigers. The score was 65-31 by the end of the third.
Colby Wise led the Tigers in scoring with nine points, including 3-of-3 from beyond the three-point line.
Mason Sheldon scored seven points and had six rebounds, while Andy Vial, Tanner Johnson and Dakota White each scored six.
Atlantic shot the ball well, shooting 30-of-45 from the field.
Last Monday night, the Tigers defeated Shenandoah on the road, 69-52.
Shenandoah had the lead early, taking a 23-14 lead in the first quarter.
The Tigers defense stepped up in the second quarter and only allowed seven points, cutting Shenandoah’s lead to 30-28.
Red Oak’s defense went even further in the third quarter, giving up only five points, while the Tigers’ offense scored 23. The Tigers maintained their lead in the fourth quarter and went on to win their first conference game of the season.
White led the Tigers in scoring with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Johnson finished the night right behind White with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Rodrigues and Goracke also scored double-figure points, Rodgrigues with 15 and Goracke with 11.
Sheldon led the team in rebounding with seven boards for the night.
Red Oak plays Glenwood at home Tuesday night and will play their last game before winter break Friday night when they head to Council Bluffs to play Lewis Central.
