Tigers lose to Harlan, beat Shenandoah

RED OAK — The Red Oak Tigers softball team lost Thursday night in a doubleheader against the Harlan Cyclones.

Red Oak lost the first game 2-0 and the second one 6-1.

"The first game, we gave up two unearned runs and we left a base runner out there that should have scored,” Tigers Softball Coach Nate Perrien said. “In our minds, I'm thinking we should have stole a game 1-0 from the No. 8 team in the State of Iowa."

The Cyclones scored a pair of runs in the first two innings, to take a 2-0 lead in game 2.

Red Oak had a runner in scoring position in the third inning, but were unable to bring her in.

Harlan scored a third run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Gabi French scored the only run of the game

French opened the sixth inning with a lead-off double.

French was 1-for-3 at the plate. Paige Stoaks and Kristi Yardas had the other hits in game two.

Harlan put the game out of reach for Red Oak by scoring three runs in the seventh inning.

"The big thing with our girls is, we talked about it, if we don't beat ourselves, we have a chance to hang with anybody,” Perrien said. “We make errors, we hurt ourselves and you can't win when you make mistakes."

Perrien added that Harlan complimented the team following the doubleheader.

"I told the girls that should make them feel good and at the same time it should upset them because we've let a lot of teams beat us that shouldn't have,” he said.

On June 27, the Tigers defeated Shenandoah, 13-3, at home on Parent’s Night.

Red Oak was home Tuesday to play Kuemper Catholic.

Results weren’t available as of press time. There will be an update on the Red Oak Express website on Wednesday morning.

The Tigers will be on the road Saturday as they play the Creston Panthers to open up Regionals.

Red Oak played Creston last Tuesday, losing to the Panthers 11-1.
