Tigers handle Kuemper, Corning

RED OAK — The Red Oak Tigers girls’ tennis team shut out Corning High School in Red Oak, Thursday.

The meet was originally to be held outdoors, but was instead held on the indoor tennis courts at the Montgomery County YMCA.

Since the boys varsity team was competing at the same time and in the same place, the matches were a first to eight.

First seed Emily Pierson started the match with an 8-0 victory over Kelsey Roberts. Pierson's sister, Rachel, defeated Madison Shuey 8-2.
Brittany Walker shut out Hannah Muller, 8-0, as did Abbey Swanson, who defeated Anastasia Steshina.

Paige Vannausdle defeated Kelsey Aristey 8-3 and Zoey Baker won over Adelina Morales 8-4.

In varsity doubles, all three Red Oak teams won 8-1.

The team of Emily Pierson and Rosa Brunner defeated Roberts and Shuey, the team of Rachel Pierson and Erica Sherman defeated Mullen and Brittany Shafer and the team of Walker and Kristine Boatman defeated Audra Bartenhagen and Valerie Heaton.

Red Oak picked up their first win of the season last Monday against Kuemper Catholic in Carroll. The Tigers defeated Kuemper, 9-0.

The Pierson's won their singles matches 10-0, with Emil defeating Liz Knobbe and Rachel defeating Abbey Albrecht.

Walker won her match against Sami Schmitz, 10-1. Vannausdle and Baker had 10-5 victories, with Vannausdle over Beth Wittry and Baker over Lisa Daringer.

Abbey Swanson held off Lexie Albrecht, 10-7.

In varsity doubles, Emily Pierson and Swaonson defeated Knobbe and Abbey Albrecht, 10-2. Rachel Pierson and Baker took care of Wittry and Lexie Albrecht, 10-2.

The team of Walker and Vannausdle had a 10-3 win over Schmitz and Daringer, to wrap up the win.

Red Oak is now 2-1 this season. They travel to Council Bluffs on Thursday to take on Lewis Central.
