Tigers can’t contain Corning, lose 6-2

CORNING – The Red Oak baseball team struggled in the late innings again as they lost to the Corning Red Raiders, 6-2, Saturday.
The Tigers were the first to score as Dylan Berry drove in Dakota White in the top of the third inning, to break the scoreless tie.
Corning fought back, scoring a run in the bottom of the inning.
The Red Raiders scored again in the fourth as Red Oak’s starting pitcher Beau Boeye gave up a single and walked three consecutive batters. The third free pass drove in the go-ahead run for Corning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Boeye found himself in trouble again as the first two batters reached.
He almost worked his way out of trouble, with both base runners stealing, Boeye made a leaping stab at a line drive. With both runners left between bases, Boeye had a chance of ending the inning with a tailor-made triple play. First baseman Jackson Miller was unable to handle Boeye’s throw for the second out, and all runners were able to make it back to first and second.
That error, followed by two additional miscues led to a four-run inning. The Tigers went to the top of the sixth.
With a new pitcher on the mound for Corning, Cody Walford forced a leadoff walk. He advanced around the bases on three consecutive pass balls, leading to the Tigers’ second and final run.
After winning their first four games at home, the Tigers have dropped the last six games, including the last four, which have been on the road.
Monday, the Tigers lost to Creston 13-1, followed by a 6-3 loss to Atlantic Thursday.
The Tigers are hoping for a quick return of the ace of their pitching staff, Jackson Miller, who left Monday’s game with soreness in his throwing elbow. He is hoping to be back in pitching form by the end of the week.
The biggest highlight of the week was Nick Leinen’s three for three performance against Atlantic with two doubles and an RBI. In the same game, senior Dylan Berry hit two for three with one double.

The Tigers travel to Glenwood Tuesday, to face one of the top teams in the state. Red Oak hosts Treynor, Wednesday, before traveling to Lewis Central Friday. They close the week hosting Atlantic, Saturday.
