Tiger VB advances to 3A regional championship

The Red Oak volleyball team swept Shenandoah Tuesday, Oct. 29, to advance to the Class 3A, region 3 championship.

“We were laser focused on what we needed to do,” Red Oak head volleyball coach Angie Montgomery said. “We didn’t let up.”

The Tigers dominated the Fillies 25-14, 25-10, 25-9.

Sophie Walker led the Tiger attack landing 17 kills and two aces, while getting a dozen digs and one block on defense.

Lexi Johnson had 11 kills, four digs, one block; Chloe Johnson eight kills, 10 digs, four aces; Ellie Rengstorf four kills, 10 assists, seven digs, one ace; Tory Carrick two kills, one assist, two digs, two blocks; Allie West one kill, three assists, five digs, one block, one ace; Ashlyn Blackman two digs; Liz Carbaugh one dig; Chloe DeVries 11 assists; Abbey Jones 12 assists, four digs, one ace; Jaylyn Vanhouten two digs; Kamryn Wendt one dig.

The Tigers (32-6) will play Des Moines Christian (24-6) in Atlantic on Monday, Nov. 4. The winner of that match will advance to the state volleyball tournament beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

“I spent the day watching West Des Moines Christian,” Montgomery said. “I feel good about how our conference has prepared us. They are very similar to a lot of the teams we play in our conference, night in and night out. Our conference has maybe one or two teams that are not at 500. We have had over half of our teams ranked at one time or another this season. Every night you step out you have to be ready to prove what you’ve got and how good you are, and I think that is a huge benefit to us. We have teams that are good year in and year out. It’s competitive, and I feel like we are well prepared for what is ahead because of the competition in our conference.”
