Three steps to help prepare for disasters

As Flood Awareness Month continues throughout March, the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division reminds citizens they have an important role to play in their state’s disaster preparedness.
According to David L. Miller, Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division Administrator, there are three simple steps citizens can take to make sure they are prepared for flooding, or any emergency or disaster in their community.
1. Learn about and stay aware of the flood risk in their area. Listen to radio and television stations for the latest warnings and watches and purchase a NOAA Weather Radio for their home or business to be alerted to severe weather or flooding conditions.
2. Work with family members to put together a family emergency plan so they will know who to contact if they are separated in an emergency and where they will go if they are told to evacuate. Make plans to ensure needs can be met for elderly family members and those with special health concerns. Make plans for pets.
3. Put together an emergency kit. Be sure to include important documents, such as insurance and financial information, prescription medications and other items that may be needed if they cannot return home for several days.
