Technology progresses, increases learning at Inman

First grade at Inman Primary School in Red Oak is quickly being taken over by technology.

Since beginning kindergarten, students have been going to a computer lab to enrich reading and math skills. Recently, we have seen those same enrichment skills brought into the classroom.

Our mobile laptop cart has allowed us to continue our progress from the computer lab, but on a more regular schedule.

In addition, we have begun to use two web sites to practice comprehension, fluency and vocabulary.

Finally, thanks to the hard work of the custodians on Jan. 16, a day the rest of us had off, an interactive projector has been mounted in a first grade classroom.

“Spelling City” is a web site allowing first grade to practice weekly spelling lists. These lists have helped us to understand some of the guidelines of our language, such as blends including the letters “r” and “l.”

The website “Bookflix,” introduced by our friends in kindergarten, has brought hundreds of new books to our fingertips through the laptops. Students have the option of listening to books to continue working on understanding fiction and nonfiction text, broadening their vocabulary and hearing what quality reading with appropriate rate and expression sounds like.
