T’Wolves fall short versus Wayne

 CORYDON — The struggles for Southwest Valley baseball and softball continued Friday night after their losses to Wayne.

The baseball team lost 10-0 to Wayne in five innings. Southwest Valley (6-18) was held to one hit by Nick Frederick as Wayne scored four in the fifth inning to get the win via the mercy rule.

In softball, the T’Wolves lost 11-0 to Wayne in five innings. Wayne scored four runs in the fifth inning to get the win via the mercy rule.

The Timberwolves (5-17) were held to two hits in the loss. Lexi Bronner and Danica Sunderman both went 1-for-2 in the game.

Both teams played doubleheaders Thursday night against East Union.

The softball team lost 5-4 and 6-0.

In the 5-4 loss, Southwest Valley had a 4-0 lead early until the fifth inning when East Union scored five runs.

Ashtyn Grossnickle had a 2-for-3 game with three stolen bases and one run scored. Lexi Bronner was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Kiara Roberts, Kim Hults, Danica Sunderman and Kylie McBride all had hits in the game.

Southwest Valley was held to two hits in the 6-0 loss as East Union scored all six of its runs in the fourth inning.

Grossnickle was 1-for-2, as was Shelby Nelson.

The baseball team got the sweep victory as they won 8-0 and 21-11.

In the 8-0 win, Southwest Valley took the early lead and put up five runs in the sixth inning to put the game away.

Bryan Pearson was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Ryan Carlson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Nick Frederick got the win, allowing just two hits and striking out 14.

In the 21-11 win, Southwest Valley had 18 hits, including three from both Parson and Chance Cobb. 

Colten Drake hit a home run as he was 1-for-5 with two RBIs. Hunter Pontius was 2-for-5, as was Ryan Allison. Joey Kernan went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Both Southwest Valley teams lost last Wednesday to Shenandoah. The baseball team lost 10-2, while softball lost 10-3.

Last Tuesday, both teams lost at home to Nodaway Valley. The softball team lost 6-1, while the baseball lost 10-4.

Both teams were scheduled to play Monday night. The softball team was home to open regional tournament action against Audubon, while the baseball team played Essex.

Results from both games weren’t available as of press time.

Should Southwest Valley softball win the first round game, they would be scheduled to play in the quarterfinals Wednesday night in Greenfield against Nodaway Valley. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.

The 2A Region 8 semifinals will take place in Irwin Friday at 7 p.m. and the regional final will be July 13 at Harlan.

The baseball team will be back in action Tuesday night when they hit the road to play Audubon, scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.

Wednesday night, Southwest Valley will be home to play Bedford for a JV/varsity doubleheader that starts at 6 p.m. in Corning.

The Timberwolves will begin 2A district baseball play Saturday night when they go to Stuart to take on West Central Valley. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.

The winner of the game will play Des Moines Christian next Tuesday at West Central Valley High School in Stuart.
