SWV boosters to host Gable July 18
CORNING — The Southwest Valley Booster Club is hoping a special guest will help raise interests in the school’s athletic programs.
The booster club will host legendary University of Iowa wrestler and coach Dan Gable in a July 18 speaking engagement.
The former Hawkeyes wrestling coach will be speaking at the Adams County Speedway, located at 1200 John Street in Corning. Gable is expected to speak at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday the 18th.
“This is a huge opportunity for not only Southwest Valley schools but also all of the surrounding communities,” said Southwest Valley booster Kristi Drake. “His drive to achieve peak performance from himself and those under his coaching allows him to occupy a plateau that few have ever achieved. He has a unique ability to pull the most out of each individual than they ever thought possible of themselves.”
Drake said the boosters came up with the idea of bringing in Gable in March, as a way to create excitement for the 2015-16 school year.
“He will inspire our communities and teams by speaking about team building, motivation and overcoming adversity,” Drake said.
Considering Gable’s popularity as a motivational speaker and his limited schedule, the group knew finding an available date and location was going to be a challenge.
“Gable’s success as an athlete and a coach is his direct result of his dedication, work ethic, and ability to get the very most out of himself and others,” Drake said. “We hope our teams will build off his story and create enthusiasm within our schools and communities.”
While athletes are the target audience, it’s also an opportunity for others in the community to listen to the former national champion and Olympic gold medalist.
“Athletes need to see the importance of team work, dedication, accountability and hard work. Community members should learn ways to positively motivate our young athletes, coaches and teachers,” Drake said. “Dan Gable is bigger than just a coach and athlete, he will provide all of us important principles that we can use in our careers, our schools and our families.”
Before Gable speaks, a meal will be served by the Adams County Cattlemen from 5-6 p.m.
Should it rain, the event will be at the Activity Center at Southwest Valley High School, located at 902 9th St. in Corning.
Tickets are available from the sponsor businesses of New Balance Commodities, Bank Iowa in Corning, Akin Building Centers, Okey Vernon First National Bank and the Southern Hills Veterinary Services.
Admission is $5 for adults. Southwest Valley students with a student ID and children 12 and under are free.
