State Playoff Football Preview: 8-Man

The state playoffs get underway Wednesday night all across the state. Here's a look at a few match-ups from the 8-man games.

Stanton Vikings (7-2, 4-2) @ Ar-We-Va Rockets (5-4, 5-1)- 7 p.m. @ Westside

Both teams have a small winning streak going. Stanton has won three straight, while Ar-We-Va has won two in a row.

Stanton defeated Heartland Christian last Friday, 67-22, in their final regular season game. As for the Rockets, they defeated East Greene 61-34.

This will be the first meeting between both teams. Stanton has had success in the playoffs in recent years, winning the state title in 2007.

This will be Stanton's 11th postseason appearance. Last year, they won their first round game against East Greene 44-6, but lost in the second round to Glidden-Ralston.

The Rockets, who have made seven state playoff trips prior, didn't make the postseason, last year. They last made it to the playoffs in 2009. Ar-We-Va lost to Armstrong-Ringsted 66-6, in the first round in 2009.

Interestingly enough, Ar-We-Va did make it to the semifinals in 2007, but lost to Armstrong-Ringsted.

Boyer Valley Bulldogs (6-3, 4-2) @ East Mills Wolverines (8-1, 5-1)- 7 p.m.

The Wolverines lost their only game up to this point of the season last Friday to Fremont-Mills. Prior to the loss, East Mills had went through the competition in 8-man district 8.

Boyer Valley defeated Woodbine on Oct. 14, 48-6. This will be the first time both teams meet.

The Bulldogs made the playoffs last season, but lost in the first round to Fremont-Mills. This will be the third postseason appearance for Boyer Valley.

East Mills lost to Fremont-Mills in the second round of last year's postseason. This will be the fourth straight playoff appearance for the Wolverines. Nishna Valley and Malvern have a combined 10 postseason appearances.

We'll have more on this game and Stanton's game in the Nov. 1 edition of the Red Oak Express.

Woodbine Tigers (3-6, 2-4) @ Fremont-Mills (8-0, 6-0)

This will be the first time both teams meet each other.

This will be the third playoff appearance for Fremont-Mills. They made it in 2010 and 1982. Last season, the Knights lost in the semifinals to Armstrong-Ringsted, 45-34.

This will be Woodbine's sixth postseason appearance. The Tigers last made it to the state playoffs in 2009 when they lost in the first round to Graettinger-Terrell.

Woodbine has had success in the playoffs. In 1997, they finished second in the Class A title game, losing to West Central.

Winner of this game will play the winner of Stanton/Ar-We-Va on Halloween night.

Sidney Cowboys (6-3, 3-3) @ Glidden-Ralston Wildcats (8-1, 6-0)

With the exception of the week two loss to Newell-Fonda, Glidden-Ralston has played solid football for the regular season.

Sidney meanwhile enters this game having lost two of their last three games. Those two losses came to Fremont-Mills and Stanton, though. This game will also be a first time meeting.

This will mark Sidney's seventh postseason appearance. Their last postseason appearance was in 2009, when the Cowboys lost in the first round to Cumberland Anita Massena. Sidney has two playoff wins.

Glidden-Ralston lost in the quarterfinals last season to Fremont-Mills. They're the only school in Iowa to win an 11-man championship, as well as an 8-man title. This postseason marks their eighth straight appearance. They've made it to nine total.

Winner of this game gets the winner of East Mills/Boyer Valley.

There are other notable games taking place Wednesday night, including CAM at Moravia, Adair-Casey versus Tri-County and Lenox at Melcher-Dallas.
