Stanton, Villisca join other schools in conference jamboree

STANTON—Corner Conference girls basketball scrimmages occurred last Monday night when eight schools participated in the Stanton Jamboree.

The Stanton Viqueens were the main event for the scrimmages, as they faced Essex. Stanton won the scrimmage, 46-4.
Kadie Subbert and Sara Sederbury each scored 12 points for the Viqueens in the scrimmage. Sederbury, a freshman, scored three baskets in less than 15 seconds.
“She’s quick, not afraid to go after the ball. I like the way she keeps her head up with the dribble,” Head Coach Bruce Subbert said.
Stanton had come in to the Jamboree with four practices under their belts.
“One thing we talked about before the game is we wanted to make sure we hustled and got up and down the floor,”  Subbert said. “There’s a lot of stuff we haven’t put in as far as offenses and defenses. I thought the kids did well.”
Subbert said some of the freshmen were a little nervous prior to their scrimmage.
“I didn’t think they looked too nervous at all,” Subbert said. “I think it does help to get a few of those jitters out, the next time you step on the floor. It’s not the very first time.”
In the scrimmage prior, Villisca played Nishnabotna. Villisca led for most of the scrimmage, leading 15-11 after the first quarter. Sophomore’s Morganne Haer and Amanda Focht were responsible for 11 of the Blue Jays 15 first half points. The Blue Jays held on to win, 26-19.
Fremont-Mills faced Sidney and South Page faced the Clarinda Academy in the early scrimmages.
The Viqueens open up their regular season Tuesday night, Nov. 30, when they hit the road face Bedford. Friday night, Stanton will be on the road again when they face Clarinda Academy.
Villisca also opens their season up Nov. 30 when they face Lenox.
