Stanton knocks off East Mills after losing to Red Oak
MALVERN — The Stanton Viqueens basketball team got back on track Friday night with a win over the East Mills Wolverines, 58-14, at East Mills High School.
The Viqueens shut out East Mills in the first quarter, 18-0, and kept the ball rolling from there.
Carmen Subbert had a big game for the Viqueens, scoring 21 points on 10-for-16 shooting, as well as seven steals and five rebounds. Subbert was the only Viqueen to record double-digit points.
Stanton in fact finished the game with 32 steals on the night, with Rachel Sorensen responsible for eight.
Ragen Anderson scored nine points, while Sorensen had eight and Kara Allen recorded seven, respectively.
Paige Peterson scored six points and recorded six steals in the win.
Stanton’s win is fresh off their loss last Tuesday to the Red Oak Tigers, 47-36. Stanton trailed for most of the game and were even down by 12 points at halftime.
“Their defense was the difference,” Viqueens Head Coach Bruce Subbert said after the game.
The Viqueens cut into Red Oak’s lead in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers held on to win.
“We were playing a little more physical,” Subbert said. “Our screens were a little bit better, we were moving a little bit sharper. All those things combined just helped us out a little bit.”
Anderson finished the game as Stanton’s leading scorer with 12 points on 5-for-13 shooting. Subbert scored seven points, while Allen and Peterson each recorded six in the game.
Turnovers were an issue for the Viqueens as Red Oak recorded 17 steals during the game.
“We were trying to start our offense way out too far, so we ended up throwing some long passes,” Subbert said. “That combined with not going to meet the ball, led to many steals.”
With the split week, Stanton is now 12-5 for the season. Their loss to Red Oak snapped a 10-game winning streak.
The Blue Jays are back in action Tuesday night when they drive a couple miles east to face the Villisca Blue Jays for the second time in less than two weeks. The season series is tied 1-1.
Friday night, the Viqueens will be home to play host to the Essex Trojanettes.
