Stanton heads into holiday break with pair of wins

The Stanton girls basketball team closed out the week winning both of their games and entering the holiday break with a 7-2 record.

Stanton defeated the Sidney Cowgirls last Tuesday 78-36 in Sidney. The Viqueens jumped out to a 17-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Stanton’s win against Sidney was the third time this season they scored 70 points or more in a game.

It was a big night for Ragen Anderson as she led all scorers with 25 points, including 7-for-12 from three-point range.
Four of Stanton’s five starters finished with double-digit points.

Carmen Subbert had 12 points and 10 rebounds to get a double-double. Subbert also had six assists and three steals.
Sara Sederberg had 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting, including 2-for-6 from three-point range, with four rebounds and three assists.

Rachel Sorensen had 10 points and grabbed six rebounds, as well as had five assists.

Moriah Kammerer came close to double-digit points, but finished with eight off the bench for the Viqueens.

Stanton was scheduled to play Fremont-Mills last Thursday, but the winter storm postponed the game.

Last Monday, Stanton held off the Riverside Bulldogs to get the 45-37 win in Oakland.

Riverside jumped out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Stanton was able to erase its deficit, and tied the game at halftime. The game was tied 34-34 at the end of the third quarter.

The Viqueens pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Riverside 11-3.

Subbert was a rebound shy of a double-double as she had 16 points, as well as four steals, two assists and a block.

Sederberg had 10 points and three rebounds, while Sorensen scored nine points and had six rebounds and four assists. Anderson finished with six points in the win.

The Viqueens will be off for the next couple of weeks, but they’ll be back in action Jan. 8 when they take on Nishnabotna.
