Stanton falls short against area teams

STANTON — Both the Stanton baseball and softball teams fell short against AHSTW Thursday night at different locations.

The baseball team was home as they lost 13-6 to the other Vikings team.

Stanton (7-8) fell behind early, but got right back into it in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-RBI double off the fence in the third inning by catcher Jacob Lindgren.

It was the only hit of the game for Lindgren, who was 1-for-4, as it tied the game 2-2 through three innings.

AHSTW responded in the top of the fifth by scoring three runs to take a 5-2 lead. They tacked on seven more in the sixth to make it 12-2.

Stanton was in danger of losing via the mercy rule. They battled back by scoring four runs, including a three-run inside the park home run by David Sorensen, to keep the game alive. The home run was the first of the season for Sorensen.

The fourth run came on an RBI-single by Alex Becthold that scored Brady Johnson.

It was the last run for Stanton as AHSTW scored one more run and got the win.

Dustin Isaacson was the leading hitter for Stanton, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Reece Anderson also had a hit in the game, to go along with Lindgren, Sorensen and Johnson.

The baseball team meanwhile swept a doubleheader against Clarinda Academy last Monday winning 11-4 and 20-9.

In the 11-4 win, Stanton got 13 hits, including three by Sorensen, to get the win. Sorensen was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and four stolen bases.

Anderson was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Drake Johnson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

It took five innings to get the 20-9 win over Stanton. Brady Johnson was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Connor Hultman also went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Camaran Walter was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Chris Jones went 2-for-6 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and four RBIs.

Softball

The softball team, meanwhile, lost 1-0 in Avoca to AHSTW. The lone run was scored in the first inning as Stanton (8-15) was held to four hits.

Two of those hits came off the bat of Chelsea Weis, who was 2-for-3 with a double. Mallorie Wookey was 1-for-4, while Jody Vanderholm went 1-for-3.

The Viqueens played Sidney Friday night as they lost 4-2.

Sidney scored two runs each in the first and second inning, which made the difference in the game.

Wookey was the leading hitter for Stanton, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Weis was 1-for-3, as was Vanderholm.

Vanderholm and Lauren Stephens scored the runs for Stanton.

The Viqueens began the week with a 4-1 loss to Thomas Jefferson last Tuesday in Council Bluffs.

Stanton was held to three hits in the game. Stephens and Nicole Graham went 1-for-3, while Logan Wagg was 1-for-4.

Vanderholm scored the run on an RBI by Ally Focht.

Both teams were scheduled to play Monday night. The Viqueens were on the road as they began regional tournament action against Sidney.

The Vikings meanwhile went to Afton to take on East Union.
