Stanton advances to Semis
CEDAR RAPIDS—The Stanton Viqueens advanced to the semifinals of the State Volleyball tournament after defeating Grandview Park Baptist, 4-1, on Thursday in Cedar Rapids.
Stanton dropped the first set, 25-21, after staying close for most of it. The second set was closely contested once again, but the Viqueens held on late to win the second, 25-22. In the third set, the Viqueens jumped out to a couple of leads, only to see them dissolve down to a couple of points. The Defenders had a 22-20 lead, when Stanton scored five straight points to win the third set, 25-22.
Stanton took another lead and nearly lost it midway through the fourth set. However, the Viqueens built their lead to 19-13 on an ace by Rachel Sorensen. Grandview Park Baptist never got closer than seven points in the match, as the Viqueens won the fourth set, 25-17.
Kaddie and Carmen Subbert scored 31 of the Viqueens 44 kills in the first round victory. Kadie Subbert also had 20 digs, second only to Rachel Sorensen, who had 21.
UPDATE: The Viqueens will face Janesville Friday night at 7:30. Janesville came from two games down to defeat Alta, Thursday afternoon.
