Stanton’s senior sharp-shooter

A steady shooter, flying under the radar for the Stanton Vikings is senior Easton Blunt. Blunt, a four-year varsity player, has scored 582 points in his high school career. Of those, 362 have been three-pointers.
“I can shoot from anywhere, but three points are more than two,” Blunt said. “I remember Ray Allen being one of the first to shoot a lot of threes; it’s become a huge part of the game now, but back then Allen was the one who I remember being known as a three-point shooter. I wanted to do that.”
Blunt grew up with his father as a coach at Bedford.
“After school Quentin and Brennan Sefrit, Cooper Nally and I would meet in Mrs. Nally’s room because all of us had parents that worked at the school. We would go to the gym and just shoot. I guess it (passion for basketball) started as a social thing.”
The Blunt family moved to Stanton when Easton was in the seventh grade. His father, Kevin Blunt, is K-12 principal at Stanton and the current boys co-head basketball coach.
“I feel a little bit of extra pressure with my dad as a coach, but he’s been my coach or helper in everything I’ve been in since I was little, so I’m used to it. I actually think it’s better with my dad as a coach because it’s not just that he’s coaching his son, but he’s coaching his son and a group of guys out there, and making us all come together to play the best we can.”
Kevin graduated from Stanton, a four-year, four-season athlete, and holds an impressive spot in the athletic program, including two years all-conference in basketball.
Easton knows his athletic records will not outnumber his dad’s, but he adds with a grin, “Dad played before three-pointers, so I’ve got that.”
Easton can get his dad on the court occasionally.
“I can beat my dad now one-on-one, but Justin [older brother] does not lose at horse. I have never beaten him. And my dad probably shoots over 95 per cent at the free throw line to this day. That’s where I get my shooting abilities from.”
Blunt is quick to defer the spotlight to others, complimenting his teammates’ different abilities, and referring to his family’s generational athletic abilities.
But on the court with other high school players, Easton competes well. He has finished the last two seasons second in most three-pointers in a game in the Corner Conference with seven and six respectively, and last year led the conference in total three-pointers made. His goal is to repeat that this season.
“My freshman year in a game at Nishnabotna I heard everyone yelling, ‘shoot it and I looked at the clock and it showed two seconds left so I just shot it and it went in right at the buzzer. That was the best basketball memory for me.”
Easton has high expectations of himself, but doesn’t hold onto his mistakes or missed shots during a game. “I just keep shooting, because I know I can make the next one.”
Easton will continue his education at Iowa Western, but does not plan to play basketball.
“This is it for basketball. I want to focus on my education and figure out what I want to do,”
Seems like college will be a slam dunk for him.
