Squadron of Heroes raising funds for ballistic vests

The Southwest Iowa Squadron of Heroes has set a lofty goal for 2021: to supply a ballistic vest protection device to each of Montgomery County’s fire and EMS providers.

Approximately 50 RTS Tactical Premium Plate Carrier vests will be needed to outfit fire and rescue personnel in Elliott, Grant, Red Oak, Stanton, and Villisca.

Southwest Iowa Squadron of Heroes board member Brad Baker explained while law enforcement is trained to enter and counter a threat, ambulance and fire crews are responsible for entering the ‘hot zone’ and render aid or remove the injured without ballistic protection.

“All Montgomery County first responders have been trained in tactical medicine, but vest protection has only been a dream of theirs for the last four years,” Baker said. “We have partnered with a provider that will make ballistic vests, we have negotiated this price to $300 per unit. The Level III protection provided will be for small arms, rifle and bladed weapons, with plates covering torso, back and sides on the vest.”

The overall cost for these vests is more than $15,000 but well worth the cost, added Baker.

“We have contacted area chiefs, and they are beyond moved towards having this possibility,” Baker said.

Baker said they are applying for grants to help with the costs, but are also seeking the financial assistance of those in Montgomery County to help pay for the vests.

“This will be a phased fundraiser. The initial funds will cover the ballistic vests; any additional financial support will go towards vest identification, vest attachments, and finally, helmets.”
