Sports Calendar: September 24

Here is a look at all the sports action going on around the area for Sept. 24.

Pending the weather of course, the Red Oak and Southwest Valley cross country teams will be in action Tuesday as they compete at a meet in Creston.

The meet begins at 4 p.m. and will feature the varsity, junior varsity and middle school runners.

There is a slight chance for showers for Tuesday afternoon in Creston, according to the National Weather Service morning forecast. The meet will be held at Southwestern Community College.

In volleyball, Stanton and Southwest Valley will both be in action tonight, following their match in Villisca Monday night.

Both teams are home as Stanton takes on East Mills, while Southwest Valley faces Nodaway Valley.

Stanton defeated Southwest Valley Monday night 3-0. The Viqueens currently sit at 3-0 in the Corner Conference. East Mills meanwhile is coming off an Afton Tournament in which their only win was against Mount Ayr. They lost to both Winterset and Shenandoah.

The loss to Stanton was Southwest Valley's first non-tournament loss this season. Despite the loss, Southwest Valley remains one of the top teams in the Pride of Iowa Conference. They play a Nodaway Valley team that won a couple of tournament matches in Carroll last weekend.

Both matches are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

In Essex, the Trojanettes are on the road as they play Heartland Christian. The match will be played at the Boys and Girls Club in Council Bluffs at 7:30 p.m.

Essex snapped a losing skid Monday night with their 3-0 win over West Nodaway. They'll try to make it two in a row when they face Heartland Christian.

Finally, Griswold hits the road Tuesday night to take on Treynor in a Western Iowa Conference match-up.

Griswold is coming off a loss to Underwood from last Tuesday, while Treynor missed out on the championship semifinals at the Red Oak Tournament on Saturday.
