Sports Calendar: May 30-31
It's the last Friday in May and there is plenty of sports action scheduled for the day.
The day starts early for a couple of sports.
The 1A boys state tennis tournament kicked off Friday morning at the Byrnes Tennis Center in Waterloo. Red Oak tennis player Jordan Nelson was scheduled to compete Friday morning in Waterloo. The senior is Red Oak's lone boys qualifier. The tournament will continue Saturday morning at Byrnes Park, or at the Blackhawk Tennis Center, in case of inclement weather.
Meanwhile, the 1A boys golf tournament kicks off Friday at noon at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown. Griswold is among the teams scheduled to compete in the tournament. It will also continue Saturday at 8 a.m.
There will be no shortage of softball and baseball games scheduled for the evening.
In Red Oak, the softball team will be home at the Red Oak Sports Complex as they play host to Lenox as part of a JV/Varsity doubleheader. It all starts at 6 p.m.
The Red Oak baseball team will be on the road as they head to Carroll Baseball Stadium to take on Kuemper Catholic. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
Both Red Oak teams will be home Saturday. The softball team hosts a varsity tournament, which features Essex, Fremont-Mills, Griswold, Riverside and Shenandoah. The tournament kicks off at 9 a.m.
Meanwhile, the Red Oak baseball team faces off against Essex in a JV/Varsity doubleheader, which starts at 10 a.m. at Red Oak Legion Park.
The only Corner Conference game on the slate for Friday evening will be a JV/Varsity doubleheader between East Mills and A-H-S-T. It starts at 6 p.m. at A-H-S-T.
Southwest Valley's softball team will be on the road Friday evening when they face off against Clarinda in a JV/Varsity doubleheader, which starts at 5:30 p.m.
The Southwest Valley baseball team will compete in a tournament Saturday at I-35 High School.
In Western Iowa Conference action, both Griswold teams are home Friday as they host Audubon. The action kicks off at 6 p.m. at Griswold High School.
