Solid hitting not enough for Tigers busy week

The Tigers dropped both games in a double header with Glenwood on Monday, June 17 at home.
Red Oak rallied in the final inning and plated six runs, but it was not enough to overcome the 12-run deficit and the Tigers fell 13-7.
Mitchell Johnson started on the mound and threw 2 1/3 innings, giving up seven earned runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked four.
Dawson Bond threw 2 2/3 innings, giving up no earned runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout; Cam Vanderhoof pitched an inning, allowing two earned runs on two hits; and Colton Kinnison pitched an inning that included two strikeouts.
Red Oak tallied seven hits on offense, two singles apiece from Vanderhoof and Garrett Couse. He also drove in two runs on the night.
Carter Bruce, Cole Carlson, and Wyatt Sederburg added a single each for the remaining hits.
Bruce plated two runs, while Bond, Vanderhoof, Carlson,  Couse, and Chase Roeder each scored one.
In game two, the Tigers fell 8-3.
Couse started on the mound. He gave up one earned run on one hit with three walks.
Bruce pitched seven innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, walking three, and striking out four.
“We know that Garrett will have better outings on the mound than the start of this game tonight,” Red Oak head coach Mark Erickson said. “We also know that if we would have made plays behind him to begin the game, his outing could have been much different. Carter did a wonderful job of holding Glenwood down until we could get back in the game.”
Red Oak combined for five hits with Vanderhoof, Bruce, Couse, Kinnison, and Sederburg all getting singles.
Glenwood scored in just four of 14 innings.
“We did a good job of putting up zeroes on the mound and on defense, but we need to limit our walks and errors,” Erickson said. “Giving teams like Glenwood extra outs and free bases is not a recipe for success. Win or lose, this group is staying positive and getting a better understanding of the game each time we play.”
Couse, Kinnison, and Dillon Burns scored one run each.
Denison
The Tigers split with Denison on Thursday, dropping the first game and winning the second game.
Johnson recorded the 3-0 loss in the first game, pitching four innings. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, walked two and struck out two.
Bond pitched two innings of relief and did not allow a run.
Red Oak combined for just four hits; one each from Bond, Bruce, Couse, and Johnson.
“We left eight on base and couldn’t come up with a key hit at the right time,” Erickson said.
In the second game, the Tigers used a big fifth inning to extend the lead to 14-12, and were able to hold on for the 16-13 victory.
Burns earned the win from the mound, beginning and finishing the game with a total of four innings pitched.
He gave up only one earned run on seven hits, walked five and struck out five.
Bond threw 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four earned runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one; and Vanderhoof pitched 2/3 of an inning.
“We knew we were capable of putting big innings up as we did tonight,” Erickson said. “We had been hitting the ball hard in previous games and not seeing the results. We saw the results in game two tonight.”
Kinnison led the Tigers at bat, going two of four with a double and a home run. He earned three RBI and plated three of the Tiger runs.
The Tigers combined for six doubles, the other five coming from Vanderhoof, Bruce, Couse, Sederburg, and Johnson.
Bond and Couse scored three runs each, Johnson two, and Vanderhoof, Bruce, Carlson, Burns, and AJ Schmid each added one run.

Lewis Central
The Tigers fell 11-0 on Friday in a five-hit game against Lewis Central.
“My message to the players after the game was simple: throw strikes and make plays,” Erickson said. “We can compete with anyone when we are around the zone and make the routine plays.”
Couse pitched four innings, and Carlson and Kinnison combined in relief.
The Tigers got one hit each from Burns, Carlson, Vanderhoof, and two hits from Bond.
Red Oak falls to 6-12 on the season and play at Creston tonight beginning with a JV game at 5:30 p.m.
