Selberg qualifies for state cross country meet
SHENANDOAH – Junior Alec Selberg will make a repeat appearance at the Iowa state cross country meet after qualifying last week in Shenandoah.
Selberg easily made the top 15 cut to qualify for the state meet by finishing in eighth place in Thursday’s race. Selberg ran the 5K course in 17:32.05, half a second ahead of North Polk’s Will McCormick. Southeast Valley’s Spencer Warehime won the race with a time of 16:52.81, 40 seconds ahead of Selberg’s time.
Other Red Oak runners included Weston Rolenc (27th, 18:26), Liam Eubank (42nd, 19:12), Ben Koppa (60th, 19:52), Noah Roberts (61st, 19:54), Sean Griffen (69th, 20:19) and Ryan Dyson (74th, 20:32).
As a team, Red Oak finished eighth out of 15 with 195 points, 15 behind seventh place Interstate 35, Truro. North Polk (58 points), Southeast Valley (93) and Woodward Academy (117) finished in the top three spots to qualify their entire teams for the state tournament.
On the girls’ side, senior Ashley Brower finished 26th with a time of 22:25 in what will be the final race of her high school career.
Underwood’s Karley Larson won the individual championship with a time of 19:09.47.
Other Red Oak runners included Paige Shirley (35th, 23:12), Juhianna Boeye (41st, 23:32), Sydney Straw (56th, 25:45), Emma Ross (60th, 26:44). Abogao; Sjer,am (63rd, 27:46) and Lauren Gilbert (64th, 27:51).
As a team, Red Oak finished seventh out of 13 with 191 points, 59 behind sixth place West Central Valley. Shenandoah won the meet with 55 points, followed by state-qualifying North Polk with 60 and Southeast Valley with 91.

By qualifying for the state meet, Selberg will compete at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course Saturday in Fort Dodge. The boys’ Class 2A race is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
Selberg competed in 2014 after the Red Oak boys’ team qualified for state with a second place finish at the district race. Selberg would finish 98th in the race with a time of 18:52.7.
