Second half surge leads Bedford past Southwest Valley 35-23

CORNING – Bedford scored 28 unanswered en route to a 35-23 win over Southwest Valley Friday night in Corning.

Southwest Valley scored first when quarterback Chance Cobb threw a perfect 20-yard pass to Addison Bull, capping a nine-play, 65-yard drive. Cobb, a defensive hero in a 15-0 win over Clarinda Academy in which he had four interceptions, ran the two-point conversion in to give Southwest Valley an 8-0 lead with 4:40 left in the opening quarter.

After a long Bedford return gave them the ball midfield, the Bulldogs scored three plays and 62 seconds later when Sawyer Andresen raced 40 yards for a touchdown.

The game’s fast pace continued on the next drive as Southwest Valley scored just two plays and 80 seconds later when Cobb raced 80 yards down the sidelines for a score. With 2:18 left in the quarter, Southwest Valley pulled away 15-7.

Southwest Valley seemingly had a chance to put the game away when Bedford’s Clay Cox lost a fumble on the next play from scrimmage. Grant Maurer recovered the fumble, giving Southwest Valley the ball near midfield. Southwest Valley couldn’t capitalize on the good field position, though, as they were forced to punt three plays later.

Bedford turned to the ground game and ran the ball seven consecutive times, including a successful fourth down conversion, before Hunter Russell threw a 36-yard touchdown to Maxwell McMillin.

With the score tied at 15-15, neither team managed to mount a serious drive the rest of the second quarter, leaving the game tied at halftime.

Bedford though got the running game going in the second half, thanks in part to Justin Folkerts, who ran for over 80 yards and a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters. Folkerts finshed the game with 159 yards and 18 carries, which didn’t include a 45-yard second quarter touchdown negated by a penalty.

Andreson scored a second rushing touchdown in the second half, finishing with 78 yards and two scores.

Bedford’s third touchdown of the second half came courtesy of the defense, as Quentin Sefrit intercepted a pass and returned it 29 yards for a score. It was one of four interceptions in the game for Bedford.

Cobb completed 11 of 22 pass attempts for the Timberwolves, finishing with 188 yards and one touchdown. He also ran the ball 15 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Jace Peterson led Southwest Valley’s receiving corps with four catches and 105 yards. Bull finished with four catches as well on 70 yards.

Tony Klocke led the defense with 12 tackles, including one for a loss. Scott Palmer had six tackles, including two for a loss and two sacks.

Southwest Valley (1-1) is back in action Friday as they travel to Panorama.
