Wrestling

The Red Oak wrestling team swept their triangular meet Tuesday night against Riverside and Clarinda Academy.

Red Oak held off Riverside, 40-39. Tanner Mertz, Dakota Petty, Geoff Sellers, Tanner Allensworth and Matt Soe all picked up pinfall victories.

The dual in fact ended in a tie. Red Oak won the match on the ninth criteria for a tie score, which was scoring the first point in eight of 14 matches.

Red Oak also defeated Clarinda Academy, 48-33. Bailey Akers, Jordan Vrba and Seth Esaias picked up additional wins for the Tigers.

Red Oak faces a big test Saturday when they head south on Highway 48 to compete in the Shenandoah Duals.

Girls Basketball

The Villisca Blue Jays are now 6-0 on the season as they defeated the Stanton Viqueens Tuesday night, 46-43.

Free throws by Morganne Haer and Jill Vanderhoof late in the game made the difference.

Three players (two Stanton, one Villisca) finished with 14 points to lead in scoring. Villisca's Amanda Focht and Stanton's Carmen Subbert and Sara Sederburg each scored 14. Focht in particular had 17 rebounds, giving the junior a double-double.

Both teams play Friday night. Villisca will be home to host Nishnabotna, while Stanton hits the road to play Essex.

Boys Basketball

Stanton picked up their fourth win of the season Tuesday night when they defeated Villisca, 60-46.

The Vikings pulled away, starting late in the third quarter, which soon transitioned to the fourth.

Greg Focht led Stanton in scoring with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Travis Herzberg led Villisca in scoring with 14 points.

Stanton plays Friday night at Essex, while Villisca will be home at that time to play Nishnabotna.

In other boys basketball action, South Page scored a win against the Essex Trojans in College Springs Tuesday night, 46-34.

Essex's Jordan Jones had a double-double in the loss, scoring 10 points and grabbing 14 boards.
