Schraft wins 3000; Becthold 3rd, 4th

Montgomery County area schools brought home an individual state title and several medals from the State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines last weekend. 

The lone title came from East Mills. Freshman Janette Schraft of East Mills won the Class 1A 3000 meter run on Thursday, roaring to a time of 10:48.20, which won the event by 21 seconds.  She had a hand in three other events that scored for the Wolverines.

East Mills finished sixth in the Class 1A team scoring with 32 points. 

West Hancock was the 1A girls meet champion with 50 points. Sidney was eighth with 28 points. Nodaway Valley was 20th with 14 points, Bedford was 26th with eight points, Fremont-Mills was 35th with five points, and Mount Ayr was 53rd with a point. 

Stanton finished tied for 21st in the boys Class 1A team scoring with 11 points. Lisbon won the team title with 52 points. In the region, Mount Ayr was fourth with 34 points, Nishnabotna was sixth with 26, St. Albert was 11th with 18, Nodaway Valley was 34th with eight, Bedford was 41st with five, and Fremont-Mills was 52nd with two.

Red Oak’s Juhi Boeye qualified for the Class 2A state meet in two events.

In the 200 meter dash on Thursday, she finished 24th in the prelims and didn’t qualify for the finals with her time of 27.99. It took a time of 26.54 seconds to qualify for the finals. Keaton Kester of Earlham won the finals with a time of 25.33.

In the 400 meter dash, also on Thursday, the Tigers’ sophomore finished 20th in the finals with a time of 63.05 seconds. There were no preliminaries for the 400. Okasana Covey of Des Moines Christian won the 400 with a time of 57.19.

She was the only representative from Red Oak to participate at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Stanton

Senior Alex Becthold of Stanton finished third in the Class 1A discus on Friday. His best throw of 166 feet came on his third try, and it was more than 10 feet farther than his second-best throw. The event was won by Tom Yezek of Northwood-Kensett, who set a state meet record with his best throw of 197 feet, 5 inches.

Bechtold threw 52 feet, 4 inches on his second shot put of the day, and that earned him fourth on Thursday. Mason Scheidegger of Newell-Fonda won the event with a toss of 55-2.5 on his sixth and final throw.

Stanton’s girls shuttle hurdle relay team didn’t qualify for the Class 1A finals, but it ran the 19th fastest qualifying time among the 24 entries. Junior Ally Focht, sophomore Madison Franczen, sophomore Abbi Adams, and junior Chelsea Weis ran 1:13.94. It took 1:10.71 to qualify. Belle Plaine won the title with a 1:06.80.

Chris Jones of Stanton was timed in 11.84 in the 100 meter dash preliminaries. It was the 19th fastest qualifying time on Thursday. It took an 11.55 to reach the finals on Saturday, which were won by Korby Sander of Belmond in 11.30.

Jones ran 23.98 in the 200 meter dash preliminaries on Thursday. That was the 22nd fastest time. It took 22.98 to reach the finals on Saturday, which were won by Bryce Achen of WACO in 22.45.

East Mills

Freshman Hanette Schraft of East Mills the Class 1A 3000 meter run on Thursday, roaring to a time of 10:48.20, which won the event by 21 seconds. 

She finished second in the 800 meter run on Saturday, covering the two laps of the blue oval in 2:20.58. That was 0.9 seconds behind champion Emalee Fundermann, a senior from Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto. 

Fundermann proved the better of Schraft in the 1500 meter run on Saturday. The freshman ran the race in 4:56.14, but Funderman ran 4:53.41.

Schraft anchored the East Mills distance medley relay team that finished third. Freshman Madison Williams, junior Emmy Duysen, junior Zena Courtier and Schraft ran 4:20.83. Fundermann led Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto to the title in 4:12.50, and Nodaway Valley was second in 4:19.33.

Matt Glockel of East Mills finished 15th in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 7.75 inches.

East Mills boys shuttle hurdle relay team finished 20th in the preliminaries on Thursday. Senior Ben Christensen, senior Josh Hopkins, senior Alec Moorman and sophomore Dylan Schroeder ran 1:03.03 in the 110-meter event.  It took 1:01.17 to qualify for the finals on Saturday, which were won by Audubon in 59.22.

Essex

Daiton Martin of Essex ran in the 1A 100 meter dash preliminaries on Thursday. She was timed in 13.60, which was the 17th fastest qualifying time. It took 13.21 to reach the finals on Saturday, which were won by Katie Maschmann of Montezuma in 12.64.

Essex ran the 18th fastest qualifying time in the 4x100 meter relay preliminaries on Friday. Junior Jescenia Mosley, senior Shea Jensen, senior Bethany Johnson, and sophomore Daiton Martin ran the loop in 52.89. It took 51.84 to qualify for the finals, which were won Saturday by Montezuma in 50.62.

Essex finished 20th in the girls 4x200 meter relay Friday. Mosley, junior Devan Gray, Johnson and Martin ran 1:51.98. West Hancock won the race in 1:46.26.

Mosley ran 17.47 in Friday’s Class 1A 100 meter hurdles, which was 22nd in the preliminaries. It took 16.29 to qualify for the finals on Saturday, which were won by Kenzie Keune of Sioux Central in 15.24.

Senior Cody McClintock of Essex ran 4:54.06 in the 1A 1600 meters on Saturday, which placed him 21st. Riley Bauer of North Union won the race in 4:25.95.

Essex finished 23rd in the 4x800 meter relay in a time of 10:50.46 with a team of sophomore Kelsi Leininger, sophomore Abbie Lindburg, Jensen, and Gray. Central Elkader won the event in 9:44.69.

Griswold

Griswold’s girls 4x800 meter relay team just missed a medal on Thursday. The team of senior Jessica Marshall, senior Payton Rush, freshman Charli Adams, and sophomore Anna Young ran 10:16.20. That was good for ninth place, just 1.21 seconds out of eighth. 

Griswold’s shuttle hurdle team finished 13th in Class 1A. The team of junior Mandi Backhaus, senior Jeana Freund, sophomore Hannah Boucher and Marshall ran 1:12.47. 

Sophomore Jadon Jahnke of Griswold leaped 19 feet, 11.75 inches in the long jump on Thursday. That was 14th among the 24 entrants. Jovante Squires of Lone Tree went 22-4.75 to win. 

Jahnke also finished 14th in the high jump, with a best of 5-9 on Friday. Cole Moeller of Wheatland won the event with a best of 6-10, an inch shy of the state meet record. He took three attempts at 6-11.25 to try to set the state meet mark, but missed on all three.

Junior David Thompson of Griswold ran 10:43.79 to place 21st in the Class 1A 3200 meter run Thursday. Keiffer Sexton of Riverside Highland won in 9:45.96.
