Schmid selected as District 1 supervisor

Charla Schmid has been appointed as Rudy Kinard’s replacement on the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, representing District 1. Schmid was appointed on Wednesday, Oct. 21, by members of a committee comprised of Montgomery County Auditor Stephanie Burke, Montgomery County Treasurer Tera Hughes and Montgomery County Assessor, Stacey VonDielingen. Schmid will serve the remaining two years of Kinard’s term.

Charla and her husband, Tim, have been married for 37 years and have two grown children, Emily and Katie. Charla worked for AT&T in Omaha for 23 years and UPS in Red Oak for nine years, as well as served in a variety of community activities.

“I have been a mentor with the YES Mentoring program for eight years and very active in the music ministry at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. I am an active member of Business and Professional Women of Iowa, which I served two terms as the state president,” Schmid said.

In addition to the community volunteering, Charla also held public office for more than a decade,

“I served on the Red Oak School Board for 13 years and served as board president for six of those years,” commented Schmid.

She became interested in serving as the appointee to the supervisors after discussing the situation with a friend.

“We discussed my time on the school board and how I could bring that experience to the county. I believe that we have a duty as American citizens to give back to our community. After much discernment, I decided to throw my hat in the ring and pursue the vacant seat,” Schmid explained.

Now that she has been appointed, Schmid said she will begin learning the ropes, and from there, develop additional goals.

“I am a goal-oriented person, so once I get started in the position I will start jotting down ideas that will turn into goals.”

Charla speculated that there was one key thing that allowed her to stand apart from the rest of the candidates who sought the appointment.

“All the candidates were excellent. I think my advantage was serving on the Red Oak School Board. I have had experience with multiple groups of people within the school system plus working with a government budget,” she said.

She added that if a special election were called, she would run against another candidate to keep the seat, but has not made any plans beyond that.

“I cannot answer this question with a definitive answer right now. I feel it is important to get into the position and see if it is a good fit for me and if I am a good fit for the people of District One,” Charla advised.

Also, she said she wanted the people of District One in Montgomery County to know that she will work hard for them in this supervisor position, and that she takes the job very seriously.
