Round-Up: T’Wolves clinch district title with win
What better way to begin a first football season together than with a district title.
That is precisely what Southwest Valley (7-2 district, 6-1 overall) did Friday night when they defeated Essex/South Page (0-9 overall, 0-7 district) 63-8.
Southwest Valley’s win was enough to hold the tiebreaker point advantage over both Fremont-Mills and Sidney, who both won Friday night. All three teams finished 6-1 in district play.
This will be the first playoff appearance for the Villisca-Corning shared team. Corning last made the playoffs in 2011. Villisca’s last playoff appearance was substate in 2008.
Southwest Valley jumped out to an early lead and never looked back Friday. They went into halftime leading 42-0.
Essex/South Page’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter when the Timberwolves were leading 63-0.
All but one touchdown came on the ground for Southwest Valley. The non-rushing touchdown came courtesy of a Gunner McCuen pick six for 64 yards. Tyler Bissell and Scott Vanderhoof each had interceptions in the win.
McCuen also had a rushing touchdown in the game as he finished with 26 yards on five carries.
Quarterback Jordan Stuart scored the most touchdowns for Southwest Valley, scoring a team-high of five with 96 yards rushing on eight carries.
Zach Barton was the leading rusher for the Timberwolves as he carried the ball 24 times for 128 yards with two touchdowns.
Defensively, Keegan Longabaugh led the team in tackles with 10 for the game, including seven solo.
The Timberwolves’ first round game will be against Boyer Valley Wednesday night in Corning.
Boyer Valley (6-3 overall, 4-3 district) clinched the fourth seed in 8-man District 7 with their win against West Harrison. The Bulldogs have won five in a row, dating back to Sept. 20 when they defeated Stanton 70-34.
East Mills 66, West Monona 0
The East Mills Wolverines cruised to second place in Class A District 8 with a shutout win against West Monona.
The win was the Wolverines second straight shutout victory.
Colby Jennings had three touchdown runs and 155 yards rushing on nine carries to leadthe Wolverines. Josh Hopkins had two rushing touchdowns and 54 yards, while Miguel Sanchez had a 36 yard touchdown run.
In his second game back from injury, Logan Currin had three touchdown passes and was 7-for-11 for 137 yards.
Travis Tupper caught two of those touchdown passes, including one for 25-yards. Michael Story had the other, which was for 37-yards.
Defensively, East Mills forced seven turnovers, including four interceptions. Sam Rew scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery of 16 yards.
The Wolverines (7-2 overall, 5-2 district) will have a home playoff game when they take on Woodward-Granger Wednesday night.
Woodward-Granger (6-3 overall, 5-2 district) has won four of their last five games, including Friday night at home 28-20 against the Bedford Bulldogs.
In their last playoff appearance, East Mills won the first two rounds in 8-man contests against Boyer Valley and Glidden-Ralston.
However, they lost to Fremont-Mills, the eventual state champions, in the quarterfinals.
Stanton 46, Nishnabotna 44
While the Vikings weren’t in playoff contention, they still had intentions of ending the season on a high note.
Stanton was able to do so, holding off Nishnabotna in thrilling fashion.
David Sorensen had three touchdown passes and 262 yards in the air as Stanton defeated Nishnabotna for the second time this season.
Brady Johnson had 108 of those yards in five catches, including a 36-yard touchdown. Trevor Wood had a touchdown catch, as did Kyle Peterson.
Peterson also had two rushing touchdowns and 78 yards on 21 carries.
Alex Becthold was the leading rusher for Stanton, carrying the ball 10 times for 101 yards, including a 35-yard run for a touchdown.
Defensively, Becthold led the team in tackles with 16, while Connor Hultman finished with 14.
Stanton finishes the 2013 season with a 3-6 record overall and 2-5, sixth in the district.
Logan-Magnolia 50, Griswold 28
The Griswold Tigers were eliminated from playoff contention with their loss Friday night to Logan-Magnolia.
Stats weren’t available as of press time.
It was the third loss in a row for Griswold, who finishes the season with a 4-5 record overall and 3-4 in Class A District 8.
Logan-Magnolia did not clinch a playoff berth with their win though because Westwood scored an upset victory against Riverside. Both Westwood and Riverside have head-to-head wins over Logan-Magnolia.
