ROMS Jazz Band takes fifth

The Red Oak Middle School Jazz Band placed fifth at the 20th annual SWIBA/Dick Bauman Memorial Jazz Festival in Glenwood Monday, Feb. 18.  
The band performed three selections for a panel of three judges, who supplied written and recorded comments. The first selection the band performed was a swing tune titled “Birdhouse Blues” by Terry White, and featured improvised solos by Brayden Sego on trumpet, Jonah Wemhoff on trombone and Joshua LeRette on drum set.  
The second piece was a ballad entitled “Long Lost Friend” by George Shutack, and featured Jonah Wemhoff on trombone. The final piece was a latin tune called “Alligator Boogalo” by Lou Donaldson, arranged by Terry White, and featured a combo of Jayden Slemp on alto saxophone, Brayden Sego on trumpet, and Joshua LeRette on vibraphone, and then solos by Brayden Sego on trumpet, Jayden Slemp on alto saxophone, and Jonah Wemhoff on trombone.
Receiving outstanding solo certificates on their improvisational solos were Jayden Slemp on alto saxophone, Jonah Wemhoff on trombone, Brayden Sego on trumpet, and Joshua LeRette on drums. In addition, Jonah Wemhoff was awarded the Oustanding Soloist for the Class 1A/2A middle school division.  
Other bands performing in the Class 1A/2A middle school division were Riverside, Treynor 8th, Treynor 7th, Tri-Center, and Underwood.
The band’s next performance will be the Red Oak Jazz Concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, at the Wilson Performing Arts Center. The Red Oak High School Jazz Band will also be performing.
