RO girls finish fifth in Shenandoah golf tournament
The Red Oak golfers hit the links several times last week in a long week of action beginning with a meet against Glenwood on Monday, April 15.
Boys
The Tiger boys team fell to Glenwood 171-196, with Nick Stavas and Dax Lappala, both of Glenwood, ending with a tie for low score of 42. After the playoff, Stavas was crowned with medalist honors and Lappala took the runner-up honors.
The Tigers were led by Garrett Couse, who shot a 44.
Other Red Oak scores: Cole Magill 46, Wyatt Sederburg 53, Ethan Horn 53, Ryan Johnson 54, and Nolan Blackman 63.
The JV boys fell 197-237. JV Tigers were led by Kaden Johnson with 53, followed by Chase Sandholm 55, Dom Brittain 59, Liam Mahoney 70, Grayson Hewitt 73, and Brandon VanHoose 81.
Sidney
The Tigers hosted Sidney on Tuesday, April 16, with the Red Oak boys having one of their best rounds of golf in the past few years, according to boys head coach Bob Boeye.
Red Oak defeated Sidney 182-207. Couse earned medalist honors, shooting a 39, while teammate Horn claimed runner-up honors with a final of 46.
Other Red Oak scores: Sederburg 48, Magill 49, R. Johnson 63, and Blackman 72.
JV Tigers defeated Sidney 227-276.
JV scores: Brittain 48, K. Johnson 54, Sandholm 62, Hewitt 63, Mahoney 64, and VanHoose 71.
Girls
The Red Oak girls fell to Glenwood 209-224.
Kathryn Gunderson of Glenwood took home medalist honors, shooting a 49, while teammate Savannah Mellon earned runner-up honors with a 52.
Kate Carlson missed runner-up by one stroke, ending the day with a 53 to lead the Tigers.
Other Red Oak scores: Libby Mensen 54, Shawna Baldwin 54, Courtni Lindsay 63, Chloe DeVries 68, and Lennon O’Neal 79.
The JV girls fell 257-272.
JV scores for Red Oak were: Allie Allison 57, Emma Bierbaum 75, Ashlyn Blackman 77, Shelby Hietman 78, Tori Carrick 80, and Maddie Hewett 87.
Shenandoah
Red Oak girls competed in the Fillies Invitational, an 18-hole tournament, rescheduled from last week to Tuesday, April 16, finishing fifth of 13 teams.
“The girls posted a team score that was just nine strokes away from medaling at third,” head girls coach Patty Henke said. “This was by far one of the best showings Red Oak has had in 10 plus years. This year’s team is setting new standards for Red Oak golf; the girls have been able to lower their 18-hole team score by 20 strokes already this year.”
Team scoring: 1- Creston 403; 2- Glenwood 428; 3- Shenandoah 439; 4- Clarinda 444; 5- Red Oak 448; 6- Harlan 453; 7- Essex/Stanton 462; 8- Abraham Lincoln 487; 9- Denison 502. No team scores for the following teams: Nodaway Valley, Fremont-Mills, Sidney, and Southwest Valley.
Red Oak results: Carlson 100 for a fifth-place medal; Baldwin 114; Mensen 116; Allie Allison 118; DeVries 122; and Lindsay 131.
Essex/Stanton results: Lexi Burnison shot a 99 for a fourth-place medal; Ainsley Byers 107; Savanna Moffett 126; Jessie Jones 130; Shelby Brockshus 136; and Allison Johnson 152.
SWV results: Abbie Wetzel 103 for a ninth-place medal; Maddi Ballard 122; Sydney Westlake 138.
“Abbie Wetzel played in the overall, number one group, paired with girls from the large school division,” Southwest Valley girls head coach Cindy Drake said. “Although she had a couple of holes where she had trouble, she did an outstanding job of playing at their level. It was a good learning experience for her to play with more experienced players.”
Drake added that Ballard had a 12-stroke improvement from last season, and Westlake improved her putting and met a short-term goal, increasing her confidence.
Nodaway Valley
The girls team defeated Nodaway Valley on the road on Thursday, April 18 by a score of 213-247.
Red Oak’s Carlson earned medalist honors with a 50, and Baldwin claimed runner-up honors with a 50.
Other Tiger scores: Allison 56, DeVries 57, Lindsay 61, and Mensen 63.
The Tigers play Clarinda today at 4:30 p.m., with the girls hosting and the boys traveling to Clarinda.
