Red Oak takes second at Treynor tournament
TREYNOR—Two wrestling champions were crowned from Red Oak during Saturday’s Treynor Tournament.
Dakota Petty (113 lbs.) and Tanner Mertz (132 lbs.) were both champions in the event as the Red Oak wrestling team finished in the top three, along with East Mills and Woodbine.
Petty defeated St. Albert’s Brody Brandenberg in the championship match to win the title at 113 lbs. The senior had a bye in the quarterfinal round and then defeated Joel Becerra of A-H-S-T via first period pinfall in the semifinals.
Mertz meanwhile picked up a 5-0 decision win in his championship match versus East Mills wrestler Luke Stortenbecker. Stortenbecker finished second in the bracket. Mertz reached the finals with a third period pinfall win in the semifinals versus SWI’s Hunter Rasmussen.
In addition, Red Oak had one wrestler finish second and three more finish third. Carlos Guerra, one of the freshmen on the team, took home second in the 145 lbs. bracket. Guerra lost a 10-7 decision to A-H-S-T wrestler Zach Hagadon. Guerra reached the finals with a 7-5 win against Marc Riley of Treynor.
Alec Selberg (120 lbs.), Christian Terry (195 lbs.) and Keaton Kephart (285 lbs.) all finished third.
Selberg lost to eventual champion in the bracket, Alec Moorman of East Mills, in the semifinals.
Terry finished third when he pinned Brandon Kruger of Woodbine in the second period.
Nick Perkins of East Mills defeated Terry in the semifinals.
Perkins won the title in the 195 lbs. bracket.
Kephart finished third when he scored a pinfall in the consolation match in 23 seconds versus Anthony Kelsay of SWI.
Caleb Orme (126 lbs.) and Lyndon Bright (138 lbs.) both finished fourth. Eddie Perez (160 lbs.) and Marc Enderes (170 lbs.) finished fifth and Colin Bruce (182 lbs.) finished sixth.
Red Oak finished with a team score of 126 points, putting them second behind East Mills, who won with 216 points.
Dual results
Red Oak opened the season by splitting their first two duals. They defeated Missouri Valley 41-27, but lost a close one to Denison-Schleswig 37-36.
Against Missouri Valley, Mertz Orme and Terry had the lone pinfall wins for Red Oak. Mertz defeated Derrick Steffen in the first minute of the first period in a 138 lbs. match.
Orme meanwhile scored a second period pinfall over Jack Kyle.
Terry meanwhile pinned Dakota Bowman in the first 30 seconds.
Carlos Guerra (152 lbs.) and Kephart picked up decision wins. Guerra won 10-9 versus Thomas Peasley, while Kephart won 7-4 against Seth Jimmerson.
Against Denison-Schleswig, Petty, Orme, Mertz, Guerra, Colin Bruce and Terry all picked up pinfall wins.
Petty secured his pinfall in the second period when he defeated Cristofer Medina.
Orme pinned Adrian Paz 35 seconds into the third period for his win.
Mertz had one of the two first period pinfall wins for Red Oak as he pinned Jacob Georgius with 49 seconds left in the period.
Guerra had the other win, a pinfall at 38 seconds in the match, versus Eric Gomez.
Phillip Decker picked up his first win on a pinfall in the second period over Emiliano Ramos in the 182 lbs. match.
Terry had his pinfall win 34 seconds into the third period when he defeated Preston Van Arsdol.
Red Oak is 1-1 thus far this season in duals.
The Tigers return to action Thursday when they take part in a double-dual in Carroll versus Kuemper Catholic and Harlan.
Kuemper Catholic has split their first two duals this season, defeating St. Albert, but losing to Glenwood. This will be Harlan’s first dual of the season.
On Friday and Saturday, Red Oak will compete at the Central Decatur Tournament.
