Red Oak takes eighth at Clarinda

 CLARINDA — Competing in a loaded Class 3A field along with Glenwood, Harlan, Thomas Jefferson, Creston, Lewis Central and many more, the Red Oak boys track team finished eighth out of eight teams competing at Friday’s Cardinal Relays at Clarinda High School.

Red Oak finished with a score of 28 points, 21 behind Thomas Jefferson. Glenwood won the meet with a score of 118. Harlan took second, while Creston finished third.

The varsity team had several top five finishes.

The best finishes of the day individually came courtesy of Josh Sunberg, who took third in both the 3,200 and 1,600-meter races. In both races, Sunberg finished behind Brandon Phipps and Cooper McDermott of Creston.

In the 3,200, Sunberg ran a time of 10:21.24, while in the 1,600,  he ran a time of 4:57.40.

Teammate Logan LeRette scored points in both races for Red Oak. LeRette was fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:27.65 and sixth in the 1,600 with a 5:08.98.

Sunberg also assisted his teammates in a fourth place distance medley finish. The team, which included Hayden VanMeter, Brock Isaacson and Gavin French, took fourth with a time of 4:00.41.

The Tigers scored points in field events, led by Travis Schon, who took fourth in the high jump with a jump of 5’6”.

Isaacson was sixth in the long jump as he leapt 17’9.5”. Nathan Guffey took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 41’2.5”.

Bryant  Hale finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.75, while Jared Sherman took 10th in the 800 with a time of 2:17.18.

Red Oak had additional top six finishes in relay races. 

In the 4x800, the team of Sherman, French, Aaron Jackson and Colton Robinson ran a time of 9:21.64 to place sixth.

The 4x100 team of VanMeter, Brendon Birt, Eli Guerra and Dylan Graber took sixth with 47.47 seconds.

Additionally, the Red Oak junior varsity team competed in the Class 1A field. 

The JV team picked up a win in the 3,200 courtesy of Connor Johnson, who won with a time of 11:13.30. His teammate Ryan Dyson was third with 11:29.90.

Johnson and Dyson also placed in the 1,600. Johnson was third with a time of 5:21.95, while Dyson was fifth with 5:25.33.

Hale competed in the high jump for the junior varsity team as he took third with a jump of 5’6”.

The Red Oak junior varsity team finished sixth in the large Class 1A field, scoring 30 points.

East Mills 

The Wolverines claimed second place in the 1A field at Friday’s Cardinal Relays. East Mills finished with a score of 101 points. Finishing ahead of them was Mount Ayr, who had 138.

The team compiled four wins during Friday’s meet.

Travis Tupper led the way for East Mills with a win in the 100-meter dash. Tupper ran a time of 10.96 seconds. Teammate Colby Jennings took third with a time of 11.52.

Tupper picked up a second win in the 200-meter dash when he ran a time of 22.72 seconds. Jennings was fifth in the same race with a time of 24.28 seconds.

Both Tupper and Jennings scored the third win for East Mills in the 4x200. They joined Colton Story and Cavin Darnold to run a time of 1:35.06.

Sam Rew scored the fourth win for East Mills in the high jump. Rew jumped 5’10” to claim the victory. Teammate Keegan Wederqist was sixth with a jump of 5’4”.

Rew and Story both picked up second place finishes in individual events. Rew was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.24 seconds. Story was second in the shot put with a toss of 40’6”.

Luke Stortenbecker was fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:22.902, while Lewis VanFossen was sixth in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:21.18.

In the long jump, Gabe Barney (17’10.5”) was third and Michael Story (17’7”) took fifth for East Mills.

East Mills scored points in a couple of relay races. They were third in the 4x100 and shuttle hurdles and fifth in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Griswold

Finishing behind East Mills was Griswold, who recorded a score of 84 points.

The Tigers had two wins Friday, both coming in relay races. The first win came in the shuttle hurdles when the team won with a time of 1:05.71. The other win was in the distance medley when they ran a time of 3:50.35.

Griswold’s relay teams had close finishes in other races, like taking second in the 4x100, third in the 4x800 and fourth in the 4x400.

The top individual finish for Griswold came courtesy of Kenneth Clary, who took second in the 100-meter dash, running a time of 11.34 seconds.

Hadley Ogg and Aaron Metheny. Both had top six finishes in the 110-meter hurdles. Ogg took third with a time of 17.88 seconds, while Metheny was sixth with a time of 20.28.

Jacob Maass took fourth in the 400-meter dash, running a time of 56.63 seconds. David Thompson was fifth in the 3,200, running a time of 11:41.37.

The top field events finisher was Mason Boucher who took third in the discus. Boucher had a throw of 126’8”. Teammate Johnny Duggan was fourth in the discus with a throw of 109’2”. Duggan additionally took sixth in the shot put with a toss of 37’10.5”.

Derek Kirchhoff was fourth in the high jump (5’6”), while Metheny was sixth in the long jump (17’5.75”).

Stanton

The Vikings took 10th in the 1A field at Friday’s Cardinal Relays, scoring 16 points and finishing ahead of Harlan’s junior varsity squad.

Stanton had three top five finishes, two of which came courtesy of Alex Becthold. Both top five finishes for Becthold came in the field events as he took second in the discus (133’6”) and third in the shot put (39’9”).

Cade Confer had the other finish as he took fifth in the high jump with 5’6”.

Southwest Valley

The Timberwolves made their regular season debut by placing fifth out of eight teams competing in the 2A field. Southwest Valley had a score of 49 points.

The key highlight came courtesy of Keegan Longabaugh, who took first in the discus with a throw of 135’3”. Longabaugh also took fourth in the shot put (43’0.5”).

Colten Drake had second place finishes in the long jump (18’11.25”) and the high jump (6’0”). Scott Vanderhoof tied for third in the high jump, leaping 5’8”.

Trevor Sorensen meanwhile took sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.10.

All the other points finishes for Southwest Valley came in the relay races. The team took fourth in the shuttle hurdles, fifth in the 4x100 and 4x200 and sixth in the 4x800 and distance medley. 

Essex

The Essex boys track team had two points finishers during Friday’s 1A meet. The distance medley team took fourth, while the 4x200 team finished sixth.

Red Oak at Glenwood Meet

The Red Oak boys track and field team finished ninth out of 10 teams competing at last Tuesday’s Ram Relays at Glenwood High School.

The Tigers finished a half point ahead of Atlantic, recording a score of 34.5. Glenwood won the meet with a score of 163.

Sunberg had the best finish of the day for the Tigers when he ran a 4:45.22 in the 1,600 to finish second. Brandon Phipps of Creston took first when he ran a time of 4:39.32. 

LeRette was eighth in the 1,600 as he ran a time of 5:03.72.

Sunberg also played a key role in Red Oak’s second place finish in the distance medley relay. The team, which featured VanMeter, Isaacson and French, ran a time of 3:56.33. Glenwood won the race with a time of 3:49.98.

Isaacson had a top points finish individually for the Tigers, placing fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18’11”, edging out St. Albert’s Andre Ryan by an inch.

LeRette finished fourth in the 3,200, running a time of 11:03.57. His teammate Dyson took eighth in the race, running an 11:23.65.  Dyson edged out Jackson Hein of Glenwood by .01 second to get into the top eight.

The only other individual finisher for Red Oak was Schon as he finished tied for seventh in the high jump. Schon had a jump of 5’4” and was tied with Sam McLaughlin of Harlan.

In other relay races, the 4x800 team of French, Sunberg, Sherman and Aaron Jackson took sixth with a time of 9:12.11.

In the 4x200, VanMeter, Isaacson, Graber and Conner Jansky ran a 1:39.66 to finish eighth.
