Red Oak sweeps Creston; starts regional tournament

In their final tune-up for the regional tournament, Red Oak swept Creston 3-0 Tuesday night.
The Tigers improved to 24-12 on the season, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-22.
Angela Mahoney posted a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs while serving 20 for 20 with two aces. Dana Marsden also posted a double-double with 25 assists and 11 digs. Sierra Athen led the team with 14 kills, six digs and two blocks.
With the win, Red Oak finishes the season with a 7-3 record in the super competitive Hawkeye 10 Conference, which features four state-ranked teams. Harlan, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, won the conference championship with a 9-1 mark, followed by Kuemper Catholic (No. 2 Class 3A) and Lewis Central (No. 6, Class 4A) at 8-2. Red Oak was ranked No. 15 in the final Class 3A poll.
Red Oak was scheduled to play Shenandoah in the first round of the Class 3A Region Two tournament Monday night. Results weren’t available as of press time.
The winner of Monday night’s match in Red Oak will play the Clarinda/Atlantic winner in the tournament semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m. in Clarinda. The championship match is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Atlantic.
