Red Oak library sets records
Red Oak’s Public Library had a record-breaking year.
During the library’s last fiscal year, July1-June 30, their circulation numbers reached 100,053. This is the first time the library’s circulation numbers have broken 100,000.
Since installing their electronic checkout system, the library also reached a one million accumulated circulation this past year.
According to librarian Kathi Most, the software does not include e-books, which would add close to 5,000 extra books a year to the circulation numbers. Other items not included in the count are people reading books in the library and services such as faxing and reference help.
Most said when the library was going through a phase of construction a few years ago, workers worried it would deter patrons from visiting.
“We were worried [numbers] would die down because we were partially closed,” Most said. “What we found out was the complete opposite. People were excited.”
She said within the next few years, she believes the numbers could increase more, especially if they can count the electronic collections.
“People are [becoming] aware and getting used to [the electronic system],” Most said. “We’re trying to double our collections.”
Most said another aspect that has helped increased numbers is the library’s summer reading programs. The library offers a summer program for both children and adults. Most said they see children from all around the area of Red Oak. “For as long as I know, they’ve done a children’s program,” Most said. “It’s an incentive for them to get together and read.”
Most said several hundred children participate in the summer program.
As for the adults, she said this is the second year to have an adult program and it has been successful both years.
The librarian said she hopes to continue seeing this type of growth and encourages community members to reach out and let the library know what they can improve on.
“The library has always wanted to offer everything we can,” Most said. “We take suggestions [for things such as] programs, books, etc. Even if you haven’t been, stop by and see what other people are enjoying.”
