Red Oak has top finishers at conference bowling
COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Red Oak bowling team had one individual conference champion as the boys finished third, while the girls took second at Friday’s Hawkeye 10 meet at the Thunderbowl.
Shane Majerus was the first boys conference champion as he recorded a 468 series, including a 247 high game.
“I didn’t really know I was going in for individual series until about halfway through the second game,” Majerus said. “I was just pumped up.”
Majerus finished 11 pins ahead of teammate David Terry, who took second with the 457.
“David and I kind of had a bowl-off the last game to see who got first and second,” Majerus said.
For the girls team, Shaely Nowels and Alexa Gilleland were second and third, respectively. Nowels had a 393 series, while Gilleland bowled a 356.
The girls finished with a team score of 2,478, falling by less than a hundred pins to Denison-Schleswig, the champion.
The boys meanwhile had a score of 2,925, putting them behind Lewis Central and Denison-Schleswig.
Majerus and Terry were the only Red Oak bowlers to finish with a 400 series or better.
Hayden Berry had a 368 series, while Dylin Keat and Garrett Patterson had a 358 and 356, respectively.
Ryan Plambeck meanwhile finished with a 335 series.
For the girls, Jasmine Forward had a 342 series, while Kendra Hardy finished with a 323. Allison Aufdenberg had a 300 series and Breann Berkey recorded a 275 series.
The Hawkeye 10 finish came a day after Red Oak swept Harlan in bowling action Thursday at Cyclone Lanes.
The boys won 2,743-2,687, while the girls won 2,288-2,108.
Both varsity teams will be back in action Tuesday, looking for a chance to compete in the state tournament.
The state qualifying meet will be in Creston this time around. The action starts with the girls tournament at 11 a.m. The boys are scheduled to follow around 1 p.m.
“Spares is going to count for everything,” Majerus said. “The way Creston’s lanes are, we’re going to have to use everything that we can get.”
