Red Oak girls golf picks up wins against Glenwood, LC
RED OAK — After not beating a Hawkeye 10 opponent for two years, the Red Oak Tigers girls golf team beat two of their conference foes last week and are off to a 2-0 start in conference play..
The Tigers defeated Glenwood 240-305 during last Monday’s meet at the Red Oak Country Club.
Ellen Fellers and Shelbie Perez paved the way for Red Oak by claiming the top two spots.
Fellers was the medalist for the meet with a score of 56, while Perez was one shot back (57) to claim the runner-up spot.
It’s the first time Red Oak has defeated a Hawkeye 10 opponent since defeating Creston in 2012.
Reilley Black was the only other Red Oak golfer to shoot below 60 as she recorded a 59.
Lauren Gilbert shot a 67, while Sadie Uhlenberg had a 74 and Belle Perkins recorded an 81.
The boys team meanwhile was in Glenwood last Monday as they lost to the Rams 152-185.
Red Oak didn’t have a golfer place in the top two as Kobe Rhodes and Andrew Tilley claimed medalist and runner-up.
Nolan Black had the top score for Red Oak with a 44. Nick Carlson (45) and Ryan Plambeck (46) were right behind. Gabe Nelson shot a 50, while Connor Johnson had a 52. Ethan Hewett had a 58 and John Johnson shot a 60.
Justin Bernard recorded a 63, while Christian Horn finished with a 71.
Lewis Central
The other win for the girls team came Thursday afternoon at the Red Oak Country Club when they defeated Lewis Central 229-237.
Fellers (54) and Perez (56) were the medalist and runner-up for the meet.
Gilbert (59) and Black (60) were both within close proximity of Fellers and Perez.
Uhlenberg shot a 69, while Perkins finished with a 71.
SWI Meet
The Red Oak boys golf team was able to pick up the wins over both SWI and Heartland Christian at last Tuesday’s meet in Sidney.
Red Oak won with a score of 191, while SWI had a 217 and Heartland Christian a 229.
Carlson and Plambeck both shot 46s, but didn’t get the top medalist position as it went to SWI’s Gavin Driscoll, who shot a 45.
All of Red Oak’s varsity golfers shot below 60. Gabe Nelson had a 49, while Black and Johnson each had 50s.
Gil Cooper finished with a 53.
The girls meanwhile fell short of defeating SWI, losing 237-244. Heartland Christian didn’t have enough golfers for a team score.
Red Oak was led by Fellers, who shot a 49. Perez scored a 57, while Black had a 68. Uhlenberg and Perkins each finished with a 76.
Red Oak was scheduled to make up a meet Monday against Southwest Valley. Results weren’t available as of press time.
The Red Oak teams will face off against Clarinda Tuesday. The boys will be home, while the girls go to Clarinda. The meets start at 4:30 p.m.
