Red Oak girls finish third at home meet
RED OAK — With one win and a couple runner-up finishes, the Red Oak girls’ track team took third at their home meet last Monday.
Red Oak had a score of 86 in their meet at the Lady Tiger Relays in the “AA” class. Clarinda won with a score of 151, while St. Albert claimed the runner-up. Southwest Valley took sixth with a score of 48.
Kate Walker had the lone win for the Tigers. Walker, who arrived at the meet a half hour earlier after competing in tennis, won the 1,500 with a time of 5:15.66, her best time of the season. Teammate Ashley Brower was third in the race with a time of 6:14.76.
Red Oak had multiple second and third-place finishes. Brower had one of those second place finishes, as she was runner-up in the 3,000, running a time of 13:33.62. Kendra Top of Southwest Valley was third with 14:08.85 and Red Oak’s Sydney Straw was fourth with 14:53.96.
The other second place finishes came in field events. Emma Ross claimed second in the discus with a throw of 80’6”. Teammate Tatum Allensworth was third with 76’3”. Southwest Valley’s Kelsey Means was fifth with 68’.
Red Oak’s Sierra Athen took second in the shot put with a throw of 30’2.5”. Allensworth finished sixth with a throw of 25’1.5”. Southwest Valley’s Shanna Saunders took fourth with 27’6”.
Nikki Graber and Juhi Boeye both had third-place finishes for the Tigers. Graber took third in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:47.05. Elizabeth Fuller (3:00.54) of Southwest Valley was sixth in the race.
Boeye took third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:09.35. Boeye also took fifth in the long jump with 14’2.5”. Michaela Buntrock meanwhile was fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.22.
The best relay finish for the Tigers came in the 4x400 when Paige Shirley, Graber, Boeye and Walker took third with a time of 4:38.63.
The 4x100 team of Buntrock, Athen, Hannah Vial and Sydney Streicher took fourth with a time of 56.42.
Buntrock also was part of the 4x200 team, including Hailey Fada, Georgia Havener and Ashley Crouse that took fifth with a time of 2:09.99.
The sprint medley team (Vial, Athen, Streicher and Graber) and the distance medley team (Buntrock, Graber, Vial and Paige Shirley) both took fifth in their respective races.
Southwest Valley scored one win at the Red Oak meet, which was Shanna Saunders, who won the discus with a throw of 86’11”.
Class A
It was Griswold and Essex finishing first and second in the Class A division of last Monday’s Red Oak meet. Griswold won with 185 points, while Essex finished second with 146. Stanton took fourth in the meet with 80 points.
Griswold and Essex each won seven events at the meet. Four of Griswold’s wins came from Alyx Flippin. It was Flippin winning the distance races.
Flippin won the 3,000 (12:07.24), the 1,500 (5:35.59), the 800 (2:37.24) and the 400-meter dash (1:10).
Payton Rush scored the other individual win for Griswold in the 200-meter dash, running a time of 30.61.
The Tigers picked up two wins in the relay races. They won the 4x800 (Alyssa Wyman, Leah Lappe, Anna Young and Rush) with a time of 11:31.70.
They also won the 4x400 (Lappe, Young, Rush and Wyman) with a time of 4:46.08.
Griswold picked up runner-up finishes in the shuttle hurdles, sprint medley, distance medley and the 4x100.
Essex won four relay races at the Lady Tigers Relays, including the 4x100 when the team of Daiton Martin, Amber Ohnmacht, Bethany Johnson and Kym Graham won with a time of 55.06.
The same group won the 4x200 when they held off Stanton by more than two seconds to run a time of 2:01.14. Stanton’s team of Logan Wagg, Lauren Stephens, Chelsea Weis and Devin Druivenga finished second with a time of 2:03.48.
Essex’s other two relay wins came in the sprint medley and distance medley.
The sprint medley team, headed by Jescenia Mosley, Graham, Ohnmacht and Johnson, won by four seconds with a time of 2:06.77.
The distance medley team of Johnson, Ohnmacht, Graham and Kelsi Leininger won easily by six seconds over Griswold with a time of 5:05.29.
Leininger, Mosley and Martin all picked up individual wins for Essex. Leininger won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:19.53, edging out Stanton’s Ally Focht by four-hundredths of a second. Griswold’s Mandi Backhaus was third with 1:20.76 and Essex’s Sara Skalberg took fourth with 1:24.52.
Mosley meanwhile held off Griswold’s Jeana Freund to win the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.12.
Freund took second with 17.60, while Stanton’s Focht was fourth with 17.94. Griswold’s Kinzey Nicklaus took sixth with 19.15.
Martin picked up her second win of the year in the 100-meter dash when she ran a time of 13.30. Griswold’s Katie Duggan was fourth with 14.17, Stanton’s Abbi Adams took fifth with 14.33 and Nicole Glassinger of Essex was sixth with 15.06.
Stanton scored two wins at the Red Oak meet, including in the shuttle hurdles when Wagg, Focht, Stephens and Chelsea Weis recorded a time of 1:13.84.
Weis scored an individual win for Stanton in the long jump. The sophomore held off Griswold’s Jeana Freund and Melodie Anstey to jump 15’0.75”.
