Red Oak girls finish sixth at Lady Tiger Relays home meet
RED OAK — The Red Oak girls track team finished sixth at Thursday’s only home meet for the season, the Lady Tiger Relays, at the Dick Morrison Track.
Red Oak finished with a score of 43, edging out Southwest Valley by four points, in the seven-team “AA” field.
The Tigers scored two victories during Thursday’s meet, including the sprint medley, when the team of Maysen Havener, Sydney Straw, Nikki Graber and Kate Walker won with a time of 2:00.85, edging out Clarinda by less than a second.
Southwest Valley’s sprint medley team, which featured Taylor Gaule, Renee Williams, Sydney Maynes and Elizabeth Fuller, finished sixth with a time of 2:09.10.
Walker scored another win for Red Oak in the 800-meter run when she held off a threat in Creston’s Lexie Little to run a time of 2:29.97. Little was less than two seconds behind Walker, running a 2:31.51.
Southwest Valley’s Kendra Top missed out on the top six as she finished seventh with a time of 2:56.47.
Walker scored additional points individually, along with Graber, in the 400-meter dash. Walker finished second in the race with a time of 1:03.46, as St. Albert’s Krisann Stephany (1:02.69) edged her out down the final stretch. Graber meanwhile took fourth, finishing behind Shenandoah’s Sydney Nielsen, running a time of 1:05.63.
Additionally, Graber finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.8 seconds. Southwest Valley’s Sydney Maynes won the race. It was the only win for Southwest Valley at the Lady Tiger Relays. Maynes edged out Clarinda’s Jenny Bair by less than a tenth of a second, running a time of 27.91 seconds.
Red Oak had a couple other individuals score points during the meet. Havener had a fifth place finish in the 100-meter dash, winning her heat with a time of 13.77 seconds. Kaylea Wiechman of Southwest Valley took fourth in the 100 with a time of 13.51 seconds.
In the 1,500, Ashley Brower took fifth with a time of 6:09.19.
Red Oak’s only other points finish came in the 4x400 relay when Graber, Walker, Vanessa Pate and Michaela Buntrock took third with a time of 4:29.21.
Southwest Valley picked up points elsewhere in the 4x200 when Gaule, Williams, Maynes and Kelsey Means took second with a time of 1:57.63.
The Timberwolves had a fifth place finish in the 4x800 and a sixth place fin ish in the distance medley.
Griswold and Stanton
In the Class A group, Griswold and Stanton finished first and second at the Lady Tigers Relays.
Griswold claimed first with a score of 180 points, while Stanton finished second with 101 points. Essex took fifth at the meet with a score of 57.
Alyx Flippin had the best day out of all the Griswold athletes, winning three individual titles. Flippin’s first win came in the 3,000-meter race when she won with a time of 12:38.66. Teammate Alyssa Wyman finished second with a time of 12:42.10.
Flippin and Wyman were also first and second in the 1,500. Flippin won with a time of 5:37.57, while Wyman ran a 5:43.51.
The other Flippin win came in the 800-meter race when she edged out Sidney’s Mackenzie Hulsing by less than a second, running a 2:38.21. Teammate Leah Lappe took third with a time of 2:43.59.
Jackie Rush also scored individual wins for Griswold in two field events. She won the shot put with a toss of 32’2.5”. Regan Burns of Essex took third in the shot put with a toss of 30’6.25”. Kinzey Nicklaus was fifth in the shot put, while Mykenzie Rainey was fourth for the Tigers. Keegan Nelson of Essex was sixth and Erin DeKay of Stanton was seventh.
In the discus, Rush won with a throw of 98’4”. Rush held off Essex’s Regan Burns, who had a throw of 95’. Teammate Candice Howell took third with 91’9”.
Stanton picked up most of its wins in the relay events. The first relay win came in the shuttle hurdles when Logan Wagg, Macy Elwood, Lauren Stephens and Carmen Subbert ran a time of 1:11.07, winning by four seconds over Griswold’s runner-up team of Nicklaus, Tatum Dolph, Mindi Backhaus and Jeana Freund.
Stanton then had a win in the 4x200 relay when Wagg, Elwood, Moriah Kammerer and Devin Druivenga ran a 1:59.93. Griswold’s team of Jeana Freund, Kayla Kirchhoff, Marquel Brunk and Melodie Anstey took second with 2:03.01.
Finally, Wagg, Subbert, Elwood and Avery Taylor were part of the 4x100 team that ran a 54.47 to win the 4x100 relay. Jeana and Justine Freund, as well as Brunk and Kirchhoff were second with 55.43.
Stanton’s only individual win came in the 100-meter hurdles when Subbert ran a time of 16.25 seconds, holding off Justine Freund, who ran a 17.27. Stanton’s Ally Focht took third, edging out both Essex’s Jescenia Mosley (who was fourth) and Griswold’s Jeana Freund (fifth).
Focht also had a second place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, running a time of 1:18.44. She was also second in the high jump, jumping 4’4”.
In the long jump, Anstey of Griswold had the best finish as she took second, leading 15’0.75”. Taylor of Stanton was fifth in the long, while Mosley of Essex took sixth.
Lady Cardinal Relays
The Red Oak girls track team picked up several more wins during last Tuesday’s Lady Cardinal Relays at Clarinda High School.
Walker picked up two wins for the Tigers individually and had a third as part of a relay team.
“My teammates push me hard in practice, Blake [Bergren] holds my blocks really well,” Walker said. “I go out there and try to get better everytime.”
Walker scored her first win in the 400-meter dash, winning with a time of 1:02.38.
“I just knew I had to step my running up and just get a good running start,” Walker said.
Graber scored additional points for Red Oak in the 400 when she took fifth with a time of 1:06.17.
In the 800, Walker won with a time of 2:30.92.
Finally, Walker was part of the sprint medley team, along with Graber, Havener and Straw, to win with a time of 2:00.32.
Walker so far this season has been pulling double-duty with track and tennis. She said she originally joined track to stay in shape.
“It’s really not too hard. I go to track after school for an hour and a half, then I go to tennis for an hour, then I go home and do homework,” Walker said. “I got a pretty good schedule going right now.”
Despite the successes in track, Walker said tennis is still the primary sport. With the tennis season starting this week, there will be times when the two teams have conflicting meets.
“If there’s any conflicitng meets, which I think there are three or four, I’m gonna go to tennis,” she said.
The tennis season for Walker started Monday.
Additional Red Oak finishers
Buntrock had a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash when she ran a time of 30.78 seconds.
The distance medley team meanwhile finished fifth with a time of 5:28.
Griswold 1st in 1A
Griswold kicked off its 2014 girls track season with a big win at the Lady Cardinal Relays in Class 1A. The team finished with a score of 120 points.
Rebekah Topham’s four victories led the way for Griswold as she scored wins in the 400 (dash and hurdles), the 800 and 1,500.
In the 1,500, Topham won with a time of 4:52.41. Alyssa Wyman finished third in the same race when she ran a time of 5:35.35.
Topham cruised to a win in the 400-meter dash when she won with a time of 1:00.22.
Teammate Justine Freund finished fifth with a time of 1:06.06. In the 400 hurdles, Topham won with a time of 1:06.75.
Her time in the 800-meter run was 2:29.30. Teammate Alyx Flippin was third in the 800 with a time of 2:39.65.
Both Flippin and Wyman had second and third place finishes in the 3,000-meter race. Flippin ran a time of 11:59.40, while Wyman finished with a time of 12:24.68.
Rush also had a win individually for the Tigers as she won in the shot put and Discus. In the shot put, Rush had a throw of 32’10.75”. Nicklaus finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 29’6.5”.
In discus, Rush won with a throw of 98’10”. Teammate Candice Howell finished third with a throw of 86’5”.
Anstey had the other field event top finish for Griswold when she placed fifth in the long jump with 15’1”.
In relay races, the best finish for Griswold came in the shuttle hurdles when they took second with a time of 1:15.47.
The 4x800 team finished fourth, while the distance, 4x200 and 4x100 took fifth. The sprint medley and 4x400 team finished sixth.
Stanton
The Viqueens had three victories, two of which came in relays, during last Tuesday’s meet. Carmen Subbert had the lone individual win for Stanton in the 100-meter hurdles, running a time of 17.60 seconds. Teammate Ally Focht took second with a time of 18.47 seconds.
Subbert was also a component in both of the Viqueens relay race victories.
The first relay victory came in the shuttle hurdles when Subbert, as well as Wagg, Elwood and Stephens ran a time of 1:13.59.
The 4x200 team, which featured Subbert, Elwood, Taylor and Kammerer, scored the other win with a time of 1:57.21.
Taylor individually had a second place finish in the 100-meter dash when she ran a time of 13.89 seconds. Additionally, Taylor had a third place finish in the 200-meter dash.
Subbert also had a fourth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles when she ran a time of 1:14.10.
Both the sprint and distance medley teams had top six finishes.
The sprint team ran a time of 2:08.34 to finish fifth, while the distance medley team took sixth with a time of 5:02.68.
Southwest Valley
The best finish for Southwest Valley came courtesy of Marie Palmer when she took second in the discus with a throw of 91’10”.
Weichman meanwhile took third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.98 seconds.
Fuller ran a time of 1:10.44 in the 400-meter dash to place sixth. Beth Herzberg took sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:16.76.
In the relay races, both the 4x100 and 4x200 teams took third, while the 4x800 team finished sixth.
Essex
The Essex girls track teams kept meanwhile had several top finishers at the Clarinda meet.
Regan Burns took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 30’9.5”. Shea Jensen took fourth in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 13:36.11.
Jescinia Mosley meanwhile took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.57 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash, Kym Graham ran a time of 14.48 seconds.
The best relay race finish for Essex came in the 4x800 when they took fifth with a time of 11:30.94.
The shuttle hurdle relay team meanwhile finished sixth with a time of 1:25.68.
East Mills
The Wolverines lone top finisher at the Clarinda meet was Kendra Croghan, who finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.26 seconds.
