Red Oak girls down Glenwood

Red Oak girls defeated Glenwood 59-53 last Tuesday, bringing their wins on the season to the same as all of total last year.
“We’re a young team, and I think we had a little letdown to start that fourth quarter,” coach Dan Martinez said. “I don’t think we ever got our aggressiveness back  we had in the first half. I was pleased we were able to hold on.”
The Tigers built a 16-point lead by halftime, dominated by senior Sierra Athen.
“I thought Sierra was going to dominate the whole game,” Martinez said. “She stopped herself a little in the second half, and we started scrambling too much, but we played really well in the first half for not playing very good defense and Hannah not shooting real well.”
Martinez was referring to Hannah Vial, the second high scorer for the Tigers. Vial averages 14 points a game, directly behind Athen’s average of 15.
As the second half began, Vial’s shots dropped in and a big three-pointer at the end of the third quarter took Red Oak’s lead to 20 points.
In the final quarter, Glenwood switched its game plan and used a full-court press on the Tigers.
The Rams rallied to within three, but the aggressive Tigers held on for the victory.
Athen ended the night with a game high of 21 points, followed by Vial with 14.
Ellie Rengstorf scored 12 points, and Dana Marsden had 10.
Chloe Johnson scored the remaining two points for the Tigers.
Athen’s 15 rebounds gave her a double-double in the game; her first this season.
Rengstorf added four assists and six steals in the fight, while Vial contributed five assists.
