Red Oak gets the win against Clarinda

CLARINDA — The Red Oak boys basketball team got back in the win column Friday night after defeating the Clarinda Cardinals 67-47.

The Tigers (2-2 overall, 1-1 conference), jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter and kept adding to their lead. The win was Red Oak’s first since Nov. 27 against Griswold.

Brendon Birt scored a career high 21 points as he was 6-for-8 from the three-point line in the Red Oak win.

Pete Walker also had a couple of three-pointers as he finished with 12 points, the only other Red Oak player to score in the double-digits. Walker’s five steals were a team high.

Both Tanner Johnson and Ryan Leininger came close to the double-digit mark as Johnson scored nine points, while Leininger had eight.

Jose Perez and Gavin French each scored five points, while Jordan Nelson had three and Andrew Palmquist scored one.

Atlantic 41, Red Oak 33

The Tigers had the first quarter lead and even led 22-21 at halftime, but the Trojans jumped ahead in the third quarter and were able to hold on and defeat Red Oak, last Tuesday. Atlantic outscored Red Oak in the third quarter 13-8.

Leininger finished with nine points to lead Red Oak. Johnson scored seven points, while Walker had six.

Red Oak will continue to play road games for the next week as Tuesday night they’re playing in the second game of a varsity doubleheader versus Glenwood. Friday night, they’ll be in Council Bluffs to play Lewis Central.
