Red Oak falls short against Lewis Central, Glenwood

COUNCIL BLUFFS—The Red Oak Tigers boys’ basketball team lost Friday night to Lewis Central, 64-27.

The loss was Red Oak’s fourth straight.
A second half rally wasn’t enough for Red Oak as they lost 53-43 to the Glenwood Rams, last Tuesday night.
Down 31-19 at halftime, the Tigers rallied in the third quarter, outscoring the Rams 15-8. The Tigers run culminated in a Matt Goracke hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer, to cut Glenwood’s lead to 39-34.
“It would have been easy to pack it up and call it a night,” Red Oak Head Coach Brad Schlieman said. “I thought our kids hung in, I thought they kept fighting.”
Red Oak chopped away at Glenwood’s lead and got to within two points of tying the game. However, bad breaks, which included offensive rebounds, free throws and three-point plays, increased their lead to 45-39.
“That’s what really was the killer,” Schliemann said. “You can’t have those lapses.”
Red Oak was forced to foul late, but despite missed free throws down the stretch for the Rams, the Tigers were unable to capitalize.
Both teams stayed close throughout the first quarter, with the Tigers holding a 6-4 lead around the halfway point of the quarter. Glenwood went on an 11-2 run the rest of the quarter to take a 15-8 lead.
The Rams continued to build their lead in the second quarter, taking a 16-point lead at one point in the second.
Red Oak rallied to cut the Rams lead to 10 points late in the half.
Johnson finished the game leading Red Oak in scoring with 19 points, as well as rebounding with eight. Johnson’s 10 first half points helped Red Oak stay with Glenwood.
“We got the tempo back where we wanted it. We slowed ourselves down offensively and we got better looks at the basket,” Schliemann said. “We don’t mind running, but Glenwood’s a pretty athletic team and that’s a tempo they want to play at. We don’t want to be running all the time.”
Gustavo Rodrigues scored eight points and five assists, leading Red Oak in the assist category. The Tigers didn’t make a lot of mistakes, turning the ball over a season low eight times.
With their season on break, the Tigers will get some opportunities to practice.
Their next game will be Jan. 4 when they travel East on US 34 to take on Creston.
