Red Oak artist teaching craft

RED OAK — Darcy Horn was born in California and lived in South Dakota and Nebraska but decided to settle in Red Oak. Horn owns The Jade Dog at 413 North Third St. You’ll find unique art-to-wear and unusual beads and findings to use in your own creations. Horn sells her pieces at her shop and online, but wants to expand into more teaching of the craft. Horn didn’t start out making tiny Barbie bracelets, “In high school I took architecture I liked the mechanical the drafting and the math. One of my professors in a composition class we did a drawing freehand and he told me I had the worst color sense of anyone he’d ever had. I’m surprised I went four years to college for architecture and it was being brow beaten a lot. I got into jewelry about 10 years ago and started by selling on eBay and was working at a picture framer at an art gallery.” Horn said. Darcy teaches at Iowa Western in Shenandoah and Atlantic at has four classes at each location. She also works part time as a buyer for International Bead Market in Rockbrook Village in Omaha, Neb. Darcy has a collection of her work at The Joslyn Art Museum Gift Shop in Omaha, Neb. The buisness has been consistant and it’s been great exposure. “My plans for the future, I’d like to get to bigger shop right on the square. And have it support me, so I wouldn’t have to work in Omaha.” said Darcy. When asked if there was someone famous she’d love to see to her artwork on, Darcy replied, “I always thought someone like Christina Aquila would look good in this piece.” Classes are forming now.
