Post office undergoing makeover

For Red Oak residents wondering about boarded up windows at the Red Oak Post Office, don’t fear the worst.

The post office, which was built in 1914, is going through some ongoing refurbishing projects, which started in April. Postmaster Michelle Dixon said there are two main portions of the project.

“The main thing are the windows. Since this is a historical building, we are refurbishing rather than replacing. We will have some new storm windows, and we’re also getting some painting done in the interior,” Dixon said.

Also, Dixon said repairs are being made to the middle portion of the entrance steps.

“We’re hoping to get them fixed because of the unevenness there. We haven’t gotten a contractor for that yet, but it’s in the works.”

Some of the windows have been completed, but there are still some windows needing work.

“We’ve opened up the half moons, and thankfully the original glass was all still there, so we’re going to leave those exposed. Things are coming along. We’re hoping to get the painting and windows done by the end of the year. The paint will be “Swiss Coffee,” and a trim in light gray. There won’t be much done in the main entrance portion of the post office. We’ll also have some painting done on the outside, such as the hand rails,” said Dixon.

Dixon joined the Red Oak Post Office in 2015, and said this has been a goal almost since her arrival.

“It’s taken me about four years to get this going, so it’s very exciting to me. It will be nice to have it done,” commented Dixon.

Once the work is completed, Dixon said they are hopeful they can have an open house at the post office to show off the competed work to their customers.
