One-hundred take on 10-week Live Healthy Iowa Initiative in Red Oak

 RED OAK – Area individuals, businesses, schools and churches said they were ready to accept the challenge and now they have proven it.

What started out in 2010 with five teams and 27 participants has now grown to 100 teams and almost 600 participants.

“We had to start somewhere and never dreamed we would get over 12 percent of Montgomery County Residents involved,” said Sue Drake, leader of Live Well Montgomery County.

Residents of Red Oak, Stanton, Villisca and all across the county have signed up with different goals in mind including weight loss or increasing daily activity. Currently, more than 6,000 hours of activity time have been logged and 849lbs lost. Throughout the State of Iowa, there are more than 27,000 participants.

Businesses have taken part and are offering the following discounts throughout the 10-Week Challenge:

• 10 percent off any regular priced merchandise at Red Oak Hardware Hank in Red Oak;

• 10 percent off all athletic shoes and athletic apparel at Brown’s Shoe Fit in Red Oak;

• Live Well Lunch at Fountain Perk in Red Oak: grilled chicken salad with free regular drink;

• $1 off salad at Red Coach Restaurant.

The YMCA is still available to Live Well participants with free days on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

Special thanks to Parker Norris Miller, Inc., Rodan & Fields Independent Consultant Barb Allen, Dental Care, P.C., Farmer’s Mutual Telephone Company and the Red Oak Chamber and Industry Association for donating items toward our weekly winners.
