Samuel Helm, 78

Samuel Joseph “Sam” Helm, 78, Red Oak, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at his home.
Sam was born March 19, 1945, in Montgomery County, the son of Ernest and Lela (Christensen) Helm. He grew up near Elliott, graduating from Griswold High School in 1964. He was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam war and served overseas. He was united in marriage to Darlene Anderson on Sept. 13, 1969, in Griswold. They lived most of their married life in Red Oak. Sam worked many years at D & L, which became ROMECH, where he retired.
Sam was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, scrapping metal, and in his younger years playing softball. He also loved western movies and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. Sam was known as a quiet gentle man who would help anyone anytime.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and brothers, LeRoy and Edwin.
Survivors include his children, JoAn DeWitt and husband Jeremy of Red Oak; Joseph Helm of Manassas, Va.; and Troy Helm and wife Jessica of Carter Lake; grandchildren, Tyler DeWitt and wife Rebecca of Kimballton; Trent DeWitt of Red Oak; Kylee Helm of Catlett, Va.; Parker Helm of Carter Lake; and Emma Helm of Carter Lake; brother, Elmer Helm of Stanton; and many other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2023, at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery with military honors.
