Roger Carlson, 70

Roger L. Carlson, 70, Red Oak, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.
Roger was born April 14, 1953, in Red Oak, the son of Glen and Frances (Lathrop) Carlson. He was raised in Red Oak, graduating from Red Oak Community High School in 1971. He worked for Montgomery County, the railroad, and did construction work before starting a lifelong career in farming. Roger was united in marriage to Kathy Scott on Nov. 25, 1972, in Red Oak, where they made their home.
Roger was involved in many different aspects of community and farming including United Farmers Mercantile as an associate board member; Montgomery County Farm Bureau township director; Montgomery County Farm Bureau Young Member Committee, Chairman 1977; ISU Experiment Station Council; Montgomery County Soybean Association board member; Iowa Soybean Promotion Board, serving as a District 7 Representative, Vice Chairman, and Chairman; Iowa Soybean Promotion Board Research Committee; North Central Soybean Research and Production Board as the first chairman; Red Oak Community School Board of Directors many years; Red Oak Community School District Steering Committee for bond issue 1999; Ag-Insight Board; Red Oak Presbyterian Church member and ordained Elder; City of Red Oak Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee; Bank Iowa Shenandoah/Red Oak Advisory Board member; Red Oak Community School District Steering Committee for bond issue 2017; Red Oak Child Development Center, initial Policy/Procedure Chairman; Acorn I and Acorn II Development Board member; Salem Cemetery Board; Red Oak Elks Lodge member and National Foundation Contributor; Red Oak Chamber of Commerce member; Iowa Corn Growers Association; Iowa Soybean Association member; Foster Parents, State of Iowa; ISU Pilot Program hosting Soviet agriculturalist for 1 month; and participant in Iowa Master Soybean and Corn Contests for many years. He received many honors over the years: District 9 Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Member Award; Kiwanis Outstanding Farmer for Montgomery County; Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District Landlord/Tenant Award; and Montgomery County Farm Family of the Year in 2014 to name a few.
Farming was Roger’s passion, but he enjoyed playing Bridge and spending time with his family. He loved taking the grandkids on rides in the Ranger to the river and spending time at the gazebo by the pond. Family was “everything” to Roger.
Preceding him in death were his parents; father-in-law, Walt “Bill” Scott; and brother-in-law, Bill Schmid.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Carlson of Red Oak; children, Kelly Osheim and husband Josh of Red Oak; Tony Carlson and wife Alix of Red Oak; Jessie Carlson and friend DJ Wilson of Red Oak; and Amanda Carlson of Des Moines; grandchildren, Madison Osheim, Barrett “Bear” Osheim; Katherine “Kit” Osheim; Ella Carlson, Boyd Carlson, Porter Carlson, Lillian Carlson, Vivian Carlson, and Carter Strange; sisters, Susan Johnson and husband Richard of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Peggy Blackburn and husband Robert of Sioux Falls, S.D.; mother-in-law, Wanda Scott of Red Oak; brother-in-law, Marvin Scott and wife Brenda of Essex; sister-in-law, Bev Randall and husband Kelly of Red Oak; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 22, 2024, at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. A private family burial took place at the Salem Cemetery in rural Montgomery County. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak School Foundation or the Red Oak Presbyterian Church.
