Rick Askey, 58

Rick Thomas Askey, 58, Red Oak, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.
Rick was born Aug. 27, 1965, in Red Oak, the son of Thomas and Mary (Ross) Askey. He was raised in Red Oak, graduating from Red Oak Community High School in1984. He started with the Fire Department that same year and served as Fire Chief for many years.
Rick was united in marriage to Michelle Heuer, and two children were born to this union, Amanda and Drew. Rick retired from Red Oak Fire Department in 2012 and most recently had been living in Ft. Dodge. Rick was involved in many volunteer organizations, including the Red Oak Optimist Club, Red Oak Elks Lodge, Iowa Fireman’s Association, and was a Montgomery County Reserve Deputy. While at the fire department he was instrumental in starting the Red Oak Dive Team, was a member of the Midwest Regional Dive Team, and was an arson investigator. His hobbies included hunting and fishing.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and brother-in-law, Dennis Scott. Survivors include his children, Amanda Mitchell and husband Rick of Stanton, and Drew Askey and Alexis Kittelson of Red Oak; grandchildren, Baker Mitchell, Paige Mitchell, Kobe Mitchell, Danika Mitchell, Alek Green, Amelia Green, Alaina Green, and Andersen Green; siblings, Cindy Scott and partner Gary Gass of Elliott; Randy Askey and Terri Hanger of Red Oak; and Sandy Day of Des Moines; special friend, Kristen Miller of Iowa City; and many other relatives and friends.
Viewing and visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023, at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. Cremation will take place and a celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the K-9 Unit or the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association.
