LaVern Strickland, 91

LaVern Marilyn Strickland, 91, of Stanton, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Red Oak.
LaVern was born Sept. 6, 1932, four miles east of Stanton, the daughter of Leland and Hazel (Weller) Rossander. She attended Maplehurst Country School for seven years before finishing grade school in Stanton. LaVern graduated from Stanton High School in 1950.
Prior to working for Production Credit in Clarinda as a bookkeeper, she attended Commercial Extension in Omaha, Neb.
She was united in marriage to Lee Strickland on Oct. 6, 1954, in Stanton. They made their home in Red Oak, where LaVern was employed for a short time for an attorney, before returning to Production Credit in Red Oak. In 1956, they moved to a farm north of Stanton. She worked for the Stanton Co-op for 33 years. After her retirement, she was employed part time at the Raymond James office in Red Oak.
LaVern was confirmed at the Mamrelund Lutheran Church and was a member of the Stanton Covenant Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years. LaVern was a member of the Worthwhile Club, the local Birthday Club, received the Montgomery County Fair Hall of Fame award for her work with the Fair Board, and was inducted into the Iowa State 4-H Hall of Fame along with her husband in 2012. The most important thing to LaVern was her family and attending the grandkids’ events.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Lee Strickland; sons-in-law, Rudy Kilgore and Mick Landers; brother, Leonard Rossander and his wife Lorene; and brothers-in-law, Fred and Dick Strickland.
Survivors include her children, Lyle Strickland and wife Julie of Stanton, and Linda Landers of Creston; grandchildren, Jackie Hoyt and husband Keegun of Stanton; Ethan Strickland and wife Melissa of Bedford; Collin Strickland of Amana; step-grandchildren, Dustin Kilgore of Creston; Amber Landers of Kansas City, Mo.; Jessica Burten and family of Winterset; and Ben Landers-Shearer and wife Natalie of Portland, Ore.; great-grandchildren, Max Kilgore of Omaha, Neb.; Morgan Kilgore and family of Creston; Hadlee and Anson Hoyt of Stanton; and Garrett, Preston, Judson, and Malina Strickland of Bedford; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stanton. Burial was in the Mission Covenant Cemetery near Stanton. Memorials are suggested to the Evangelical Covenant Church.
