Kirk Requist, 82

Kirk Judson Requist, 82, passed away at the home of his daughter in Urbandale on Sept. 1, 2024.
Kirk, the son of Maurice and Florence (Larson) Requist was born on May 29, 1942, at Red Oak. He attended Center and Lombardy Country Schools before coming to Stanton School, graduating in 1960. He loved all sports, FFA, and FFA Debate Team.
He married his high school sweetheart and classmate, Garnet Newman, on October 22, 1960, and they celebrated 63 years together. To this union three children were born, Lori Ann, Judson Kirk and Klint Jay. Kirk liked farming and enjoyed raising livestock. He and Garnet lived on the farm where Kirk grew up until moving into Stanton in 1985, when Kirk went into insurance sales opening Viking Insurance in Stanton and Red Oak, and retiring in 2011.
Kirk was a baptized and confirmed life member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church. He served several terms on the board, was a Sunday School Superintendent and Luther League Councilor. He was inspired by his namesake and teacher, Mr. Kirkeberg, to become an active member of the community. This led Kirk to be involved in Farm Bureau, County Extension Council, Montgomery County Conservation, Waubonsie Mental Health, School Board, Stanton Fire and Rescue Department, Stanton Chamber of Commerce, and Mayor of Stanton.
Kirk loved and totally enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, following their church, sports, music, 4-H and many other activities. He enjoyed his family and friends and their special times of water skiing, snowmobiling, sleigh riding, camping, playing cards, dancing, golfing (achieving four holes in one), State Fair, Branson, Texas and other vacations. He was very proud his children could cook and loved to have them get together and make Swedish specialties and prepare special food and meals for their family and friends.
Kirk loved people and as Garnet said, on the farm she never knew who would be coming in for coffee or lunch; she had to be very flexible. He loved his mother and their special talks and time together, his father, aunts and uncles, and had a very special love for Garnet’s parents Garfield and Edna, taking Edna into their home which he really enjoyed and felt was a good experience for his family.
Kirk felt so blessed to have his great-grandchildren, Kami and Kywin, so close and being able to be a special part of their lives. They brought much joy at a time when he was retired and could really enjoy them. Kirk’s special love was giving and receiving hugs. Kirk always held a warm grateful respect in his heart for all military, police, and fire fighters who dedicate their lives to keeping our country and communities safe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, Edna and Garfield Newman; and brother-in-law, Ronald Newman.
He is survived by his wife, Garnet of Ankeny; daughter, Lori (Beth Leib) Requist of Urbandale; sons, Judson (Gloria) Requist of Fort Myers, Fla., and Klint Requist of Ankeny; grandchildren, Jeremy (Amy) Tibben of Stanton, and Tami Tibben of Omaha, Neb.; great-grandchildren, Alexis Tibben of Sioux City; Kami Tibben of Omaha, Neb.; Kywin Tibben of Stanton; and brother, Dennis (Karen) Requist of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister-in-law, Millie Newman of Stanton; brother-in-law, John (Julie) Newman of Stanton; special friends, Scott and Robin Culbertson of Stanton; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mamrelund Lutheran Church, the Stanton Child Resource Center, or the Stanton Fire and Rescue Department.
