Joyce Royston, 77

Joyce Lynn Royston, 77, born on Dec. 8, 1946, to Clyde McHenry and Valentine (Schaffer) McHenry, passed away on Sept. 20, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Clyde Marlin McHenry; and her sister, Beverly White.
She leaves behind her children, son, Todd (Marcy) Maurer of Idaho Falls, Idaho; son, Phil Maurer of Yuma, Ariz.; son, James Maurer of Hastings; and daughter, Valerie (Eric) Haugen of Phoenix, Ariz., along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved and cherished her.
Joyce was known for her quick wit, sarcasm, and humor, making her a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew her. Many affectionately called her “Mom” due to her boundless generosity and willingness to offer advice to anyone in need. She was a go-to resource for those seeking guidance, always ready with thoughtful words and compassion. In her final days she promised to continue watching over her loved ones and warned them of the tricks she couldn’t wait to pull on them from the other side.
A true lover of games, Joyce was the reigning family Skip-Bo champion and enjoyed teaching others the ropes, proudly declaring, “Winners never cheat and cheaters never win.” Her sharp card skills were legendary, and she could choose which cards to hold faster than others could even read them. She was also an avid lottery player, often daydreaming about how she would share her winnings and make life better for those around her.
She enjoyed the thrill of Sci-Fi movies and always looked forward to the latest issue of the National Enquirer. Her love for animals was another defining trait, as she had a tender heart for the family pets.
Joyce graduated from Red Oak High School. Throughout her career, she worked at Thomas D. Murphy Co., Desert Mountain Oil Company, and CDS. She also devoted herself to caring for her grandchildren and managing her son’s Merry Maids business. Joyce most recently resided in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
A celebration of her life will be held in Iowa in the spring of 2025, where her family and friends will gather to honor the legacy of love, laughter, and generosity she leaves behind.
